Timing belt change - 100k miles???? makes me nervous
Audi says to change timing belt at 104k miles. That makes me nervous. Especially with increased horsepower.
Has anyone questioned this and gotten an answer?
How much for dealer to do the change?
How much if valves slam into pistons when timing belt breaks?

I was nervous too...currently at 66,000miles...my car is at a dealer as we speak...
for a new timing belt, serpentine belt, tensioner roller, thermostat, and water pump...I'm out of warranty at this point...just doing this for preventative maint. I heard a broken timing belt on our cars can be very, very bad----rebuild engine....thousands of dollars....maybe I'm just paranoid. My feeling is, is you're going to keep the car past 100,000 and you have 60,000 - why not just do it now and not worry....I will post cost of the job when it is done.

Yes, I then got a call telling me this was wrong.....
basically the dealer said 6.2hrs for a timing belt and wanted to charge me an extra 5 hrs (yes 5 hrs) to do the tensioner roller, water pump and thermostat - I argued that it should not take that long once the thing is apart....they agreed...we'll see how mich the total is...I'm also having a lower radiator hose replaced which requires some labor. I believe we agreed to 6.2 hours for timing belt+1hr for radiator hose+0.8 hrs for the other stuff = total = 8hrs of labor - I'll post total cost of repair when I get it.

Get it all done at 70K
* timing belt (and water pump&thermostat)
* Ribbed belt and v-belt
Flush tranny, brakes, etc.
Buy all the parts yourself....If you are in the REdmond area, have the tech at achtuning do it all....he's a certified Audi mechanic, and their rates are way lower than any dealer.

I am going to ship my S4 out to SEattle (from Boston) to do the turbo upgrade, and maintenence listed above).

http://www.achtuning.com</a

Who wants to learn about Timing Belts?
Only 2200 miles from the first emergence of my S4 from the factory she struck an unsuspecting tree. (Not to worry, I was not the owner at that time). What kind of damage can this do to your car? The worst: timing belt. It may surprise you to learn that the impact was calculated at only 10-15 mph. However, the momentum - not to mention the poor durability of an S4 front-end - was enough to force the fiberglass crossmember into the timing belt. The ultimate result was the fatal bending of two valves. Well, in troubled times I decided to stay optimistic. My thoughts were these: `Two out of thirty? Well, that's only 7%! Right on!". However, my optimistic attitude was stressed to the limit when I bought the two replacement valves for only $25 and received an estimate for inserting them of $8000! Unfortunately, the heads of a 2.7 biturbo are extremely difficult to work on without removing the engine. As you can guess, an S4 engine extraction is no easy task. It's a small engine compartment and very complexly put together. Anyway, to cut this story short, I rejected the estimate and ended up doing a lot of the work myself. Overall I think I paid $4000. From the hardship and labor I witnessed to do this task I would have to say that the $4000 was a steal!

why would you get out of warranty stuff done by the dealer.......
A private shop would be much cheaper and sometimes much more reliable. Unless the dealer is your only choice...for example my dealer charges 110/hr and my private tech's shop charges 60/hr all Master Techs. Up North they shouldn't charge more than 90/hr from a private shop.
