Default Timing belt diy question...

Im somewhat stuck and need some advice.

From several writeups, most have said they avoided partially removing the cam sprockets but the bentley and other writeups have said otherwise.

I just took off the timing belt and have the cam lock bar on. What is the general consensus on the steps from here?

Default dunno man. i did it without a cam lock bar or taking cam sprockets off. didn't have any problems.

just made sure to mark the hell out fo the sprocket teeth and make absolutely sure i wasn't off when i put the new belt on.

Default I wish I would of marked my old timing belt to make sure of things. But now my timing belt is off

with only the cam lock tool in place.

Default

no need, just mark crank and both cams where they are, all three should line up and stay lined up

Default pop off the sprockets so that they are loose when you pre-tension the belt. That's the only

way to ensure that you have the correct timing. Otherwise you're taking your chances. You might get lucky or you might end up with a noisy engine.

Default Every TB job I have done has had the cams being off to begin with, some worse than others...

You need to get the cams back to alignment with the cam lock bar and keep them there by pulling the cam sprockets off, replacing the belt, pulling the pin on the tensioner, THEN torquing down the cam sprockets. You want the cam sprockets to "twitch" slightly when you pull the pin. Now, the belt is on, the pin is pulled and the timing is perfect. Torque down the sprockets.

Default Pop the sprockets. 1/2 tooth is a few degrees and that changes your

cam timing which effects your power. Would you install new turbos and not set the wastegates properly? Would you install new suspension and not get an alignment? Popping the sprockets doesn't take long if you borrow a gear puller.

Default Do it right, pop the sprockets. Its not that big of a deal. If you have the lock bar

the cams are locked anyway. You will need a gear puller also

Pop them for sure- not a big deal at all. It is the only way to do it correctly.
