Tip vs. 6spd. What would you buy?
I ordered a 2002 S4, 6spd. It is stuck in port and now I have a chance to get one with a Tip. So, of course this a a newbie post. I have searched the archives, but not too much has been said about this specific issue.
I have never driven an S4 with a Tip, but it sounds pretty good because sometimes I am really lazy when driving around in traffic. On the other hand it just seems strange to buy an automatic on a "performance" car. Of course, I will be chipping :-)
I appreciate your thoughts...

I've driven both extensively and to be honest I didn't feel negatively at all towards the tip, I thought that I would hate it but its got decent response. You do have to be pretty aggressive with the tip though to get it to run like you want.

6spd!! Heck, it even has "anti-stalling" software!!
It's such a great gearbox (especially with the short shifter) granted its no S2k or NSX, but it does have a nice feel. The torque makes it fun to drive, you can let the clutch out, going up a steep hill and it will pull you up the hill without even puttingyour foot on the gas (all without stalling)!!
plus how can you turn down a 6-speed!!???!!

okay first of all...
If you're gonna call a tiptronic S4 an automatic, don't buy the tiptronic then. The only reason: you're probably gonna end up buying the tip, and ONLY drive in Tiptronic when you want to 'have fun' with the car. A lotta people i know who have tips don't even shift it into the tip section of their tranny. Which sucks. They call their car an automatic. I call my car a tiptronic. 2 different things.
I drive in tip all the time. after 3-4 months of using auto when i first got the card, i tried tip out and now i've haven't used auto in a long time.
Tiptronic shifts faster than a manual car, obviously, but there's a noticeable lag between the turbo's in a tip vs a 6sp (gear synchronizing i think? i could be dead wrong).
If i had the chance to do it all over, i'd get a 6speed. Tip does have it's plusses though. No worrying about traffic, easier drive, less hassle about blowing your tranny (much like many of the 6speeder's here do. HEH). Do what you think is right.
Hope that helped you out.
