Turbo Failure question....

Hello, I search through the forum and it seems most turbos failed 0-20k miles. I am looking at buying a 00 or 01 S4, and plan around 35k-50k miles on the car. If most seem to fail before this, how would one know if the turbo had been replaced, or any of the other items, like oil feed lines or f-hose?

TIA

if they replaced f hose with factory, you won't be able to tell replacement

Also, early versions of the throttle body boot clamps were prone to tear the boot, but that was updated a long time ago, sometime in the 2000 model year.

There hasn't been any updated oil feed lines to my knowledge. There were some reported cases a long time ago of ones that may have been damaged. I would guess, the issues with those should have been brought to light by now.

Only way to tell if the turbos have been replaced is through the service records, presuming you have them all. Talk to the buyer and call their service rep at the dealers, see if they'll tell you of any major repairs.

Is 64,000 miles too much for your taste? I'm about to turn my car into Audi upon lease term in the next month.

Your statement is false. Turbos could fail at any time.

email me the details...

Are you in Cali? I live in CT..would prolly need to go dealer to dealer and put the delivery costs on them.

I know they can fail at anytime, but doing a search here turned up mostly under 20k failures.

And I would say I disagree with that. I know more than a handful who have had turbos fail at 50k+.

Tampa, I'll send you an email.

ok..Thank you. I'll keep that in mind.

Trouble is, turbos *will* fail at some point, on *any* car. I've found very few that go

beyond 100k miles or so. That being said, the S4 does seem to have premature turbo failure. In many of the cases I've seen, it's a chipped car with 50-60k+ miles on it. If you're thinking of buying, I'd just go after one that's had K04s put in already. They're supposedly built like tanks, and there's only been a handful of documented failure cases on AW. I'm counting on mine lasting me *at least* until I pay off the car in a few years.

Old Audi, Saab, Volvo, etc go 200k+ on stock turbos. There is no excuse for our failure rate.

I would say chipped A4's work the K03's just as hard and have 25% or less of the failures we see.
