Ugh, dealer did something to my car... Gas gauge or gas tank is horked...
Brought the car in complaining of the car leaking gas fumes. Get it back with them saying they couldn't find any problems, and now either something is wrong with the fill pipe and I can't fill the tank completely, or something is wrong with the sensor, because "0 miles" -> Full tank is only 12 1/4 gallons, and the point at which the gas nozzle on the pump shuts off only brings the needle up to halfway between 3/4 and full on the gas gauge.
Anyone see this before?

Seen something similar, thought it was fixed but ..
I was getting intermittent faulty readings from gauge. Would say it had very little gas when I knew there was more, then would seem to come back to "true".
One time it happened when I was about 1/2 mile from dealer, so brought it in, said "come see it while it is showing the problem". They did, and found out one of the sensors in the tank was bad. Swapped it out (on warranty), seemed to be working fine.
This AM I am getting readings like 150 miles driven, 200 miles remaining, and about 11/16 worth of gas. A few minutes later, it is down to 9/19 full, and then a few minutes later, back to basically 11/16.
There are more than one sensor for the S4 tank (needed because of its shape apparently). Can't recall if connected in series or parallel.
I might have an iffy second sensor - you may have an iffy initial sensor. Only way to get them to see an intermittent problem is show it to them when it is happening.
I have a 40k service appointment on Monday, so I am recording miles driven (trip odometer), miles to empty (computer), and fuel level (fuel gauge) to "help" them.
Hope this helps.

same problem. basically seems like it's not detecting about 1/4 of the tank. really intermittent
though. I mentioned it to the dealer on my last visit, but naturally, the problem wasn't happening when I brought it in, so as far as they could tell, it seemed fine. Basically when it happens though, the pump (at the gas station) will stop when it's full, but the gauge in the car still says only 75% full.
Got some really weird readings a while ago, where the gauge said 50% full, but range of 100miles. I wasn't driving hard, and normally 1/2 tank gets me about 150miles.

Yup. 1/4 tank off on my A4, and recently, 1/8 tank off on my S.
The problem went away on its own on my A4 after going through a couple of tanks of gas. Same thing on my S4, it was 1/8 tank off, but a fill-up or two later it was back to normal.
I have no idea what the problem was. I think Audis are just weird.

Ran mine out of gas, only took 14.3 gals...
I just bought the car and couldn't believe it would actually run out of gas on me before the needle was ALL THE WAY down to the first red mark, but it did. Thankfully I was on a hill and coasted damn near a mile to the next exit on I-90 in freakin' Butte, Montana. Still not sure what posessed me to buy a car in WI and drive it back to WA.
Anyway, my local dealer checked it out and didn't find any problems. I'm still suspicious of the trip computer.
