Default Upper front suspension bearings

Anyone have any experience with worn out upper front suspension bearings?

My mechanic said mine were very worn, but I wouldn't notice anything until the steering has gone out.

Goes without saying: Replacing or repairing the steering would be a much more expensive repair.

From other forums, like "S4forum.com" and "fourtitude",
it looks to be a common problem.
Thanks anyway.

I don't know if they really go that bad. But I replaced mine. Having said that, it doesn't really correlate to doing a steering repair job at all. Which is why I kind of ignored it.

If it is the same part as the upper shock bushing, I feel like most people try to replace them when they have the suspension out. While I would think that it might be slightly easier to do if you are working on the steering because the control arms would be off, you would still have to drop the shocks which is where most of the work is anyway.

OK.
Good to know, because I was debating on whether to take a 100 mile road trip with the S4 next weekend before I change the bushings.

Drop the shocks to work on the steering? I'm confused. It's definatly not required to do a steering rack job.
