Default UUC Short Shifter

Here I am without even driven an S4, awaiting arrival of a new 2001 and I am already curious about upgrades. Who was it that had already chipped their car with 60 miles on it? Anyway, I am starting off slow and asking my first questions.
I have read elsewhere, reviews etc. that one of the complaints about the S4 is it's shifting behavior. I forget the exact terms. Anyway my questions are.
1. What does putting on a different shifter do for you? i.e. length of throw> smoother transitions? What advantages would I see in chaning shifters?
2. What difference does it make whether it's 20% or 40% reduction?

just curious.<p>Jonathan

Default There is tons and tons and tons on this in the archives if you search, but ...

for the most part it simply reduces the length of the throw. The other effects that people report are side-effects of the reduction in throw. The play that is inherent in the linkage at the transmission, which many people curiously attributed to flexing of the nylon section in the stock shifter (as if!), is geometrically reduced at the shifter, giving it a more precise feel, but also a more notchy feel if it is adjusted properly. The reduction in throw at the 20% setting is a good compromise between the length of the throw and the force needed, for me at least. Also, at 40% there will be little room for sloppiness in the adjustment, and many people had difficulty getting it adjusted properly at 20%.

For me, the shift throw was the one and only thing that was not to like when I test drove the S4, and I was very happy to learn that a solution for that was going to be available.

Default It's the one "no brainer" decision, do it. Should have come that way.
