In Michigan I can get it done at a AAA office for free as part of an anti theft program. I don't know for sure if the Chicago Motor Club does the same, but it might be worth checking out.

My dealer did it for free...actually, to every car they sell (gets it free).

Default How does this prevent theft? I'm confused.
VINs are posted on cars from the factory in a number of places as it is and they get stolen and stripped or resold regardless. How would having a VIN on a window change anything?

Default Typically VINs are etched in several places (not just the
windshield). this prevents sale of the parts from the vehicle once it's been dismantled.
