What does "Lower Final Drive Ratio" actually mean when in reference to 01 MY S4's?
#4
"Lower" means higher numerically--more torque (more)
For example, a 4.11:1 final drive is "lower" than a 3.73:1. The 4.11:1 will provide more torque multiplication (assuming the gear ratios in the transmission haven't changed), and thus, quicker acceleration.
Drawback: lower MPG due to engine's turning higher RPM's at any given speed.<p>'00 S4

Every time this question comes up, I ask ...
Is the lower final drive ratio of the MY01S4s in relation to MY00S4s or in relation to the euro-models? I think the final drive ratio of the USMY01S4's is the same as USMY00S4s. In europe, they have a taller final drive ratio for a higher top end which we supposedly do not use in the US. I can't imagine they would be lowering the final drive ratio more than the MY00S4s. 1st is already pretty short in the 00S4's. at least IMHO.
Does anybody know the facts on this?

Quicksilver thanks for being on the bimmer 5 series page.
I was joe the one with the A6 2.7T Tip. I was trying to keep it going without the bashing. It was a good discussion. I think some BMW owners opened there eyes somewhat to the fact that Audi is a good car. Thanks for the support

Not if you alter the tranny ratios
They could change the ratios of the higher gears in the S4 to counter the lower rear end at high speeds. Then you get the same high speeds and gas mileage.
There is always an optimum gear spacing and rear end (for speed), but companies rarely use it since it produces terrible gas mileage.

MY2001 S4 lower rear end?
I'm not so sure this is even true. The S4 already has really short gearing in the low gears.
Audi is very particular about rear end ratios. Quattro cars have lower ratios than FronTracs. Why? To be able to add weight without losing 0-60 performance.
I think the S4 Avants will have lower rear ends to make up for the higher weight, and the S4 non-Avants unchanged. If you reread the original statement, this is possibly what they were saying.

You're welcome! :-)
There are some Bimmer drivers over there who know the score as well, and have been contributing positively.<p>'00 S4
