what does detonation/pinging sound like?
My car makes some strange noises at WOT under full boost sometimes, a kind of clicking/clacking noise...it's very strange, and it doesn't sound healthy.

Imagine a bb hitting a concrete floor, then dump a box of them ...
if its bad it may sound like a marble or marbles hitting the floor or in a jar.
I just blew a head gasket on my VW from detonation so don't mess around if you are hearing it.

It can sound like ping-pong ***** bouncing around really fast.
Maybe the experts can correct me if I am wrong here.
My understanding is that if you hear pinging/detonation, some damage has already occurred. Pinging/detonation can occur in durations as short as 1/10,000 second, which you wouldn't hear.
If you hear the pinging, its already gotten bad; carbon build-up on valves, piston crowns, and spark plugs.
You will find that you need to use higher octane gas in order to keep the pinging under control.
I believe that the S4 has a "knock sensor" that retards the ignition when pinging/detonation/knock is detected, so it seems unusual that you would hear pinging.

so are you saying that when soemone is runing their s4 in Race mode(Apr) without 100+ octane and
doesnt hear the pinging it is still doing damage to the engine?..
