Default what happens to the ECU when you change the engine

My dad had to change the engine from a 2001 engine to a 2000 engine. I want to chip the car. What year ECU do I use
ANy help would be appreciated

Default Check to see what he has now, you can do this several ways.

1. VagCom
2. Check the MAF, If it's Bosch part then it's an A box (assumming he has a 6 speed). If it's Hitachi there could be several options.
3. Open the ECU case and check the part # on the ECU.

1 and 3 are going to be the most decisive in your case.

If 2 is Bosch then that really limits your options, otherwise it's not going to solve your problem.
