What if anything would you replace your S4 with?
my father suggested to me yesterday that I sell my S4 yesterday as well as my daily driver '00 Maxima, get one 'decent' car and use the difference for a down payment on a home. My response was there is no car less than $50k that could replace it and I would be happy with. The one exception maybe the G35 Coupe.
My S4 is paid for in full, and I plan to purchase a home within the next year to 18 months anyway (when my gf finishes graduate school). Selling it would only make me miserable. To me it would be like marrying the ugly chick that makes me unhappy, but can cook be a good wife and is loaded rather stay with the hot chick that's fun, makes me happy can cook but nay take a little longer for us to be financially well-off.
My gf is for keeping the car. But what would you replace your S4 with if you had to?

I get the same exact line that is funny. I have an 06 Tacoma as a
daily driver and i get the 'sell your s4 and buy a house line' hehe I cant think of another car that I have personally had more fun with ever. I truly love this car and wouldn't give it up.

I'm in the same boat...almost.
With a looming house purchase, I can't say I would get anything to replace the S, because it would take money out of my pocket.
So what your father is suggesting is practical, only in the sense that he expects 1 car to be less expensive than 2. The problem is, buying almost any new car means you won't be pocketing any money at all. The Maxima is worth all of $10K if you're lucky. The S4 is worth $20K or so depending on mileage. What kind of decent car are you buying with $30K...and doing the math, that leaves you nothing to put in the bank.
The honest to goodness practical solution is to sell the S, keep the maxima (in my case accord), get the house, and get another fun car another year down the road, once the made it past that first year of home ownership.
My problem isn't letting go of the S...for $10-15K more, I think I would be quite content with a P car or M3. But living with the Accord for another year might kill me. I'm already eyeing replacements for it...and trying to keep those urges at bay until the house is done.
The other alternative is to sell the Maxima and put that towards the house. Hang onto the S as a daily driver for a while, and then reconsider things in another year. I assume you have no attachements to the Maxima...so parting with it should be quite easy. In my case my daily driver is worth about $5K...pocket change really. So this option doesn't really have much appeal from a practical standpoint, or any other.
