What are the Pros and cons of different short shifters: B&M, JHM, ToyGuy, UUC, VAST, Strat?
JHM seems to be most expensive, with B&M second and ToyGuy cheapest... I am not looking for shortest, but smoothest of all...
|
jhm seems to be on everyones christmas list.
|
why? isn't it notchy?
|
the shifter was made with alot of research and testing. its not notchy if adjusted properly
|
i've used ToyGuy and Tanoga and neither were notchy.
|
I got the B&M. Its ok. Got it for christmas last year.

JHM is incredibly notchy, but that's the point. With the stock shifter, you don't FEEL neutral. With
with JHM, shifting is a two step process, you feel going into neutral and into the next gear. *snick* *snick*
Instead of just gliding from gear to gear effortlessly like stock (which feels like my girlfriends 98' Maxima) |
I love my Vast. Feels like stock but better. Shorter, faster, tighter etc
|
JHM or nothing...
|
That's because it is stock, just slightly modified.
|
The drawback of a Toy Guy is that you will pay him and he never sends it out.
Go w/ a Vast if you want the most stock like feel. B&M is horribly notchy. Stat shifter is decent. I have not tried JHM.
|
I have the B&M... came with my car... Not a fan so far. It squeeks and isn't smooth
|
This is one of the best written descriptions of how a ss "feels" that I have read thus far on AW.
Most people just use the words "notchy" or "sloppy" or "way better than stock", but nothing that really gives a mental picture of how the shifter might actual "feel" in real life.
Great post Z! |
2nd.
|
JHM is the best by a longshot as far as quality and shifter feel. I have had three others and the..
JHM will not leave my car. me = happy customer
|
That's why I like it and specifically chose it. Is that circular reasoning?
My goal with my car is upgrading various stock elements to the next (several) levels of performance but overall retaining stock look, feel and character. In other words, avoiding extremely aggressive mods.
Not that an aftermarket SS is an agressive mod... although it can increase the tranny wear... and with the 1-2 synchro issues, I want to limit additional heat, wear and abuse. |
Funny how the best one, is also the most expensive by far. Wish I had money for one...
|
Big 2nd.

I have the adjustable toy guy. I love it. I didn't get it from toy_guy.
|
How is VAST modified stock? How is it different? Any technical details on that?
|
jhm or toyguy are both good shifters
I currently have the JHM shifter installed. The "solid" feel is great, but it is a little notchy. I do feel more confident changing gears faster on the JHM. The JHM is tricky to adjust perfectly.
I had a toyguy installed before and it was also great shifter. But in the end, its just a modified stock shifter. I might actually put it back in. I'm torn on which one I prefer. I would say Toyguy was smoother, but didnt feel as solid as the JHM. Shifters all come down to personal preference, Also, might be hard to find a toyguy shifter. |
Tanoga too..love mine
|
It's the stock shifter core, the elbow redrilled and repositioned.
Sorry for the not-perfect tech talk... I'm an amateur...
Mike takes your stock shifter core (you send it to him), he redrills it, repositions the shifter, then sends it back to you... for like $56 ... really incredible value, for something that is factory, just much improved. Technically you can do all this work yourself and modify your shifter, but for $56... why not? I highly reccommend. Happy to answer more questions.

Vast SS

|
agreed.. I've run B&M and tanoga too..
and there is no comparison..
hell, my B&M snapped in half. |
thats because of the parts being used...
compare the jhm to any other shifter and you will see a difference. all the parts are hand milled/cnc'd in house with the high quality materials. there is no rubber or plastic that wears out like the other that give you a crappy feel, bottom line the jhm will never wear out.
honestly if you knew what it took to make these the price is damn cheap, jason really doesnt make a lot of money off of these. ive actualy told him many times he needs to raise the price, but hes a really cool guy and pretty much did this for the public, because he was tired of all the bs shifters. |
No argument here. Like I said, wish I had the money. Maybe next year.
|
Mine felt very "notchy" at first compared w/ stock but I loved the precise feel. Now that I'm used
to it, if feels smooth as butter.
The notchiness comes from a spring loaded ball bearing that "locks" in place when you are in gear and has little to do with the shifter other then the solid build makes it more noticeable. From what I've read and heard about the other shifters, I would pass and like others said JHM, or just keep it stock. Personally, I love the JHM far over the stock. |
yep.. it's the real deal:)
|
Do you guys have just the shifter or the shifter and all the other add ons?
