Actually, isn't the housing pretty much the same size?
It's the compressor design, with a more agressive vane profile, that sets the 04 apart from the 03, I thought. Am I misinformed?

To clarify: Physically, the two turbo units are the same size (that's why the K04 fits in the S4)...
The k04 has larger impellers (and probably some re-worked internal plummbing as well). That's what makes it "bigger." It pushes more boost, thus you'd need your ECU reprogrammed to let the k04's spin all the way.

The KO4 is physically BIGGER. This photo of the KO4 (left) and KO3 (right) . . .

The KO4 impellers are larger, as is the housing. You can clearly see in this photo that the charge air (pressure) outlet on the housing is a larger diameter. Look at the area where the housing parts numbers are molded. Larger, and a different housing part number.

Well, you're going to have to....
turn the picture over to see the back side....
j/k
I've never seen the exhaust side of the KO4.
X-Ricer, ZerinS4 and SlvrBulletS4, as well as AWE tuning, could answer question that for you.
