Can you do suspension yourself? A friend of mine suggested that it's not all that difficult and that he'd done it himself on a few of his other vehicles

Yes, I am aware of that.....but Bilstein is also starting to sell their own coilover......
....I saw it at the NE Audi Event and have also seen the ads in European Car magazine.

Bilstein BTS, PSS & PSS9 Suspension Systems

I talked to the bilstein rep at waterfest...
...and he said they are hoping to have them available by the end of august/beginning of september. If they are released on time, they will have an intro price of $899 for non adjustable coilover, and 1399 for the 9 way adjustable. These prices are MSRP

Designed by Bilstein vs. designed by H&R...
I talked with the rep at the NE event also and asked what makes them different:
H&R coilovers - designed by H&R, shocks are Bilsteins, but valved to H&R specs.
Bilstein coilovers - designed by Bilstein, springs are manufactured by H&R to Bilstein specs.
Interesting...I'm anxious for them to hit the market.
