Wheel dimension assistance please...
I found a 19x7.5 that I like a whole lot. The bolt pattern is 5x112 and the "rear spacing" ( I think this means offset) is 42mm. Will this work on my 01 S4? The only difference I see is the 42mm offset vs. the stock 45mm offset. Will it make a difference? Will it clear big brakes as well as the stock ones? Please educate me.

Fitment over brakes are not determined by wheels' sizes or offsets..
But if you really like those wheels and want to get them u can always get spacers to bump it outward. Since the offset is 42et you can just get some 8mm and make the offset 34et. It will be nice to stay in the range of 35-38et but that is also determined by how much you want to lower your car. If you planing to slam it, stay around 35-38et.. if you are just gonna lower it a tab bit or run stocks go for 32-35 et. With 42 offset you will most likely rub your stock brakes but again it depends on how the rims are set. I would guess spacers are required. If you do get spacers get H&R, they are the only real spacers I have seen, very nice quality..
Cliff notes:
42et = too far into the rim well. Lower the offset the wheels come futher out for brake clearance.
Too far out/low # off set = rubbing on fenders. Keep between 35-38et for slammed cars.
Keep 32-35 for stock or 1" drops.
