Default Wheel noise after new rim installation.....

Those of you that have gotten different rims for you car. After their installation lugnut tightening etc, did you notice if you took a turn kind sharp you heard sort of scraping type of noise being transmitted up from one or the other front wheel hubs? Then after a few turns it just completely goes away? This normal? For some reason when I put a new set of rims on today I got that noise. It sorta scared me, but I went home retorqued the wheels with a torque wrench to 89-90 pound feet. I drove out to an empty parking lot took some hard turns at lower speeds with no throttle so I could hear the noise better, still had the noise but it went completely away after a few turns? The noise would only exist at one point of the wheel rotation. (was intermitent) I know I am not geting any rotor or wheel scraping with fender walls etc. 17x8 35et so and stock ride height stock brakes rotors etc.

Could it be that the new lugs are just a hair too long? I noticed on my old lugs the bottoms were quite black and after cleaning them they did look like they could have been shaved down a hair from friction. This possible? Will try some hard turns in the same parking lot tomorrow.....

The other note the last time I did a tire rotation and also when I had my snows swapped off for my summer tires I got the same noise which also went away after a short while.

Default Either the lugs are to long or you are scraping on the caliper

on the back side of the wheel. HP2 are floating calipers it's very likely.

Default If I am scraping on the calipar I should have some visible marks on the inner parts of the rims?

I checked the rim before mounting the tires it looked like it was clearing everything fine with room to spare.... Will recheck tomorrow. Might pull a lug or two and see if any burn marks or scrapes exist. Given this also occured with my Avus rims after wheels swapping etc. I am leaning toward the bolts being <1mm too long.

Default How bad is the scraping noise?

Could it just be a slightly warped rotor making a subtle noise against the brake pads as it comes in contact? Does the noise disappear under moderate braking?

Default Might have to shave down the lugs

I know with my rims the lugs were just a bit to long when torqued down. Is the wheel weight hitting??

Default Interesting you mentioned this. I got one new rim put on the front...

left side of the car at the dealership. When I got in the car and drove off and took a right turn, it sounded as if the wheel was rubbing against some plastic sounding material. I pulled over and expected to see the plastic insde the wheel well being torn off and rubbing against the tire when I made the turn.

Looked, didn't see anything and then went to an empty lott and took some turns and no sound and it went away. I know what you are talking about, I think, but it never repeated.

Default Pretty sure its the lugs based on how old lugs look.

The olds lugs the ends of them are not perfect and level they look like they got scored.

Default Are you using bolts supplied with the new wheels, or OEM's.

If OEM's, you shouldn't be using them. Check with ER, but I think they should supply bolts with their wheels.

If you have new bolts for those wheels, I think you're right, they might be a hair too long. If you notice ANY vibrations on the highway, it's probably the bolts working loose. Shave down 1-2mm, and it should be fine.
