Default I think that is used to describe a variety of turbo failures..

I'm no mechanic, but I believe there are a few types of failure:

1. Impellor blades momentarily touch side of housing at 100,000rpm and go bang.
2. Foreign object enters turbo, hits turbine blades and they go bang.
3. Oil starvation causes impellor shaft to overheat and it goes bang.

Apologies for the lack of sound technical terminology

Default Just one technical correction......

with oil starvation, they go 'squeal' not 'bang'.

Turbo disintergrates internally, can damage motor, big oil leak, loss of power & $$$ to replace it.
