When your front brake pads look like this, it's time to change...
After overheating my Porterfield R4S pads at the track (and eating through them), I've decided that running one pad in the front for both street and track, just isn't going to work.
Front Left Backing Plates (notice the entire lack of any brake pad material)

FYI, the car stops a whole lot better WITH brake pad material...

Actually, the rotors are in outstanding condition...
The pads lasted till the last turn of my last lap of my last session at the track, so it wasn't as if I was braking on backing plates up front for a couple hours or so.
Of course, driving around like this for a couple weeks might have done some damage to the rotors, but mine are great, don't even need to be resurfaced.
Bonus...

if it was the stock brakes, I would have driven home like that...
New brakes, so no wear sensor...
Come on, do those look like stock front S4 brake pad backing plates?

oh good ;) I've had my APR level 3 brakes on for all of two weeks now
I'm doing my very first track event at Road Atlanta in June and plan to switch to track pads the day before I drive up (currently using APR's street pads.) I haven't done any research yet but I need to look into which track pads will best suit my needs. How were the Porterfields?

I'll be trying the Porterfield R4's on track next time...the R4S are great for street...
...and I'll probably keep the R4S' in the rear brakes all the time.
Although someone posted a thread not to long ago that Stoptech doesn't recommend the Porterfield stuff (I believe they like the Pagid pads).
Haven't tried Pagid's yet, probably next set I'll try them. I do know that the Pagid's cost more.
Either way, I'll never go to the track again without another set of pads. And I definitely won't run street pads on track ever again.

StopTech's comments about not using Porterfields was specific to the R4S pads.
Matt didn't have any reservations about the R4 pads for track use in my conversations with him.
From the experiences I have had/read so far, it sounds like our rear brakes aren't really that sensitive to track vs street pads. I have yet to hear of anyone cooking their rear rotors even with stock pads.
