Very Very close...the S4 is much harder to launch than the M3 the M3 will forgive with wheelspin
which you can eliminate by lifting off the throttle...the S4 will bog or smoke the clutch, AWD is a blessing and a curse...I'll take the blessings and live with the curses.

Chipped M3 is BULLSHOY.
My friend has a chip in his M3.
all it did was raise the rev limiter a couple hundred RPM....
The E36 is a very very quick car, if you bog the launch in the S4, you'll have a run for your money. If you have a chip in the S4 however, E36's usually aren't a problem. Unless they are supercharged.

Real world comes down to driver, but I'd say M3 over stock S4 with pro drivers...+
These are two great cars with simliar performance at the stock level. I have an M3 and I talked my co-worker into the S4 so my ego isn't really part of the equation.
My feeling is that a stock S4 against a "chipped"/exhaust M3, the M3 would have a slight advantage, even without the mods. I acutally don't believe the hype that a software download or an aftermarket exhaust adds much hp to an M3 at all. Maybe 10 hp versus the combined 20 to 30 that tuners like to claim.
Now, chipped S4 against a similarly modded M3, things get interesting. Here I'd have to still say it comes down to the driver on the street. But, with good drivers who know how to lauch their cars, I'd give the advantage to the S4.

Naw, a chipped S4 = +60 HP and 100 lb-ft of torque...they'll pull 5.0 sec. or better 0-60's, with
1/4's in the mid 13's. E36 M3 with chip (which does nothing for an NA motor, unlike turbocharged motors where it actually changes boost and gives measurable HP gains), and exhaust (+10-20 HP tops) wouldn't hang, though it'd make a more respectable showing than a stock one....
