0w-40 or 5w-40 would be better. I think 50w is too much IMO

Default actualy 0W-30 Castrol syntec (made in germany) will be just fine..
keep in mind that winter oild tems are lower and it takes quite a bit longer to get oil up to operating temperature..

let me put it this way.. i just got an oil change and was given 5w-50.. is it acceptable?

Yes..Acceptable for sure. 5W-50 is just as thin when cold as 5W-40 or any other 5W rated oil.
