2019 (next-gen) S6 - North America Release Timing & Lease Ending
I have a lease ending this October on a 2016 S6. I was really hoping to get a new lease on the next-gen S6, but i guess the timing is looking bad...any thoughts on the release timing of the latest S6 or suggestions on what I should do?
Love the car. It's got about 16k miles on it.

Typically the S6 is one year later (fall 2019 for 2020 model).

I'm exactly in the same boat (lease expires in Dec this year, about the same mileage). I'd prefer to cleanly roll this lease into newer S6 (or at least A6)... so any pointers on the concrete timing will help. Thanks!

So what's the prevailing opinion these days on S6 competitors that we could switch to come fall 2018?
1) RS5 4 door (sportback) - possibly not going to be out on time... old instrument cluster
2) M3/M4 - is not good - rear wheel only, pricey
3) Tesla S? I already have anxiety about "range anxiety"
4) Alfa Romeo - quality seems not there
4) what else?
Also, is there a sporty plug-in hybrid in the S6 price range that goes battery only for 20 miles?

Range anxiety doesn't seem like a good reason to not get a Tesla. 335miles seems like a lot. Its the $100k+ price that gets me.
What about a 2yr lease on an all new A6? And maybe the dealer will agree to roll you/us into a new S6 when they come out...

I went thru similar thoughts when I recently traded in my 2014 S6 for a 2018 S6. In my case I didn't have a choice to look for another model due to a trade-in credit I was offered. I did look at the S5 4 door hatchback but eventually decided to stick to another S6 for a few reasons
a) Based on reviews, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference in handling. I did not drive the S5
b) I've driven A5s with the new interior, and have mixed feelings about the shifter with the electronic button
c) The V8's rather intoxicating
The new S6 will have the same engine that's in the PanameraS and the new CayenneS. While this engine has gotten rave reviews and seems to be comparable to the current twin turbo V8 in power, I doubt it will sound anything like the V8. I bet the MPG will be better though,

I’d skip the first MY of the next gen, so that will put you in a 2021 S6 to be leased/purchased some time in 2020. That’s plenty of time to lease something else until then (I’ve been looking at the M550, if you haven’t yet go check it out).

Re Tesla S: I’m paying a bit over 1k/month for lease payments (1,073 to be precise) of my practically fully stuffed S6 prestige (I don’t have B&O – this is the only saving). I think Tesla S should be around that mark, but: trips from my home base around NYC to e.g. DC or skiing in VT will put me squarely out of range; I will then have to plan ahead re charging – which I obviously can, but do I need extra hassle? Hell no. By the way for past 3 month I’m pre-payment with Tesla 3, but I don’t think it will come to fruition by lease end time (Dec 2018).
Re M550 – excellent tip, thank you very much! Last time when I tried 5 series ~2 years ago I was more than underwhelmed; interior was blah, electronics where not there, low tech instrument cluster. Perhaps things changed.
Frankly I’m not in love with my 2016 S6, specifically I hate low speed pick up - when you press on gas from stand still at traffic light and car goes “and one, and two, oh now we drive” – what is this parameter by the way so I now how to shop better - 0 to 20 rolling acceleration?? I drove loaner 2017-2018 model year S4 (or A4?) and it was head and shoulders better in that department but given everything on the market at this price point (see my prev post) and 17k projected mileage after 3 year lease perhaps I should just buy it out for 46k.
Re S5 4 door – I had S5 coupe and I long for somewhat smaller car, plus I hope to avoid “low speed pick up” above; V8 is cool but seriously – I can settle on comparable performing V6.
Re A6 2 year lease – yes, that’s an option; it seems it will not be out on time so I have to work with the dealer
