Default Best Wheel/Tire Size for Performance

I know there are a lot of posts about wheels and tires but I am looking for the perfect balance between performance and looks. Being an Audi Quattro I am thinking 20x9 with a 35 or so offset is my best bet to not sacrifice ride quality and performance. I'm new to the mod thing so any help would be appreciated.

What performance are you worried about sacrificing? The wider you go, along with the lower you go, it helps with handling through corners. It makes our cars feel more stable.

Lighter weight = better performance.

It can be too wide and too low considering it is my daily driver so I'm trying to find a balance. I don't want to see sparks out the rear view every time I drive fast over a rain gutter and I don't want to have to buy a new wheel every time I hit a pothole. For aesthetics (and weight) I would want 21x10 HREs but I'm pretty sure that would be too wide and would rub if I lowered it. And I don't think I want to spend that much on a car I will probably get rid of in 3 years when the next redesign comes out.

It seems like you already have a good idea of what you want. I think sticking with your 20x9's is your best bet. Going up to 21's will add a lot of unneeded weight. The most aggressive offset I have seen without reported rubbing is et25 so your 35 is more than safe.

I wouldn't worry about dropping the car too much and seeing sparks unless you plan on lowering it about 40mm.

+1, except that my 21" HREs feel lighter than the stock 19" setup.

A 20" setup will be best for an all-around setup without having to worry about ride quality/harshness in a daily driver.
