Default cylinder 6 scored- replace engine?

I have a 2013 A6 with 120K miles. Was told low compression on cylinder 6 due to scoring, can't be fixed- need to replace the engine. Does that sound right? This vehicle runs perfectly otherwise. Was told this in response to the EPC light randomly coming on and running rough. The next time it runs, it's fine.

Sounds weird. Get a second opinion. If it's scored and low compression, then wouldn't it always run rough? Occasional rough running is usually electrical or fuel related.

Thanks for your reply. That's a very good point, I'm waiting to get the car back from an Audi service dept. I do not know if now- it's gone from random to constant. But, you're right..you'd expect it to be a constant issue, right? Audi quoted us prices on replacing the engine. It's more than the car is worth! We were talking about trading it and getting something else. Perhaps we should bring to another Audi? Plus- over the last several months, it's had weird random electrical dings that happen and then seem not to repeat. Brought to Audi the other day, I asked them to check all electrical, because last week, the EPC light came on once, it ran rough & seemed to correct itself upon the next start up and was fine for several days. The A/C also wasn't working. They said all electrical checked out ok, The EPC did show some misfires with no explanation- said could be dirt in the system? They fixed the A/C by replacing the pressure sensor. We paid, and on the way home- the EPC light came on again, it was chugging back to the dealer. Today, I got the call that it needs a new engine....I really don't know what to do...

Also, a scored cylinder will generally cause you to burn some oil. Are you seeing any consumption issues, smoke or residue near your tailpipes?

I'd want to see proof that they pulled the heads or sent in an endoscope to validate that #6 was actually scored. But that's just me
