Does engine shut off when low on gas when stopped?

Mileage guessometer said I still had 10 miles of range left. I pulled off the road to finish a phone call and put car in Park. Level surface. 5 or 10 seconds later the engine shut off. Restarted and continued home. Put car in Park again (level surface) and engine shut off a couple seconds later again. Filled tank later on and car is totally fine. Is this something Audi does to conserve fuel when low?

Was the start-stop switch on or off?

You can turn this feature on/off.

Sorry, I have a 16 S6. As far as I know, it doesn't have a start stop switch.

I stand corrected and had no idea I even had such a God awful feature. Answer: Hell no, it was not on!!

The mileage counter is just an estimation, especially that low. You should NEVER let it get that low man. Not worth the risk of getting stranded, and maybe damaging something. Maybe S/S kicks in when it's that low; who knows. Or the computer just senses misfirings due to fuel pump sucking some air and shuts engine down to protect it. At any rate, just don't ever let it get that low and it shouldn't happen again:D.

It’s on, unless you manually shut it off.
The switch pictured above glows red when it’s off.
Since you didn’t know it was even there, can you be sure it was off?
You were in Park, correct?

Yes, I was in Park. I definitely did not have it on. I actually didn't even realize I had this "feature". Really, the engine did not shut off because of the stop start. It has something to do with the low fuel level. I'm just wondering if this is something that's there on purpose to remind us the car is low on fuel.

You actually need to activate the switch to turn it off, the default is start-stop on.

Unless you reversed the switch (lilke many of us did), if the light is OFF, start/stop is ON. Pretty annoying light, so if it wasn't on before, that means your start/stop system was active. If your engine turned off with the system off (red light glowing), then you were running out of fuel. With just 10 of range, you were literally running on fumes.
