Why such a variety? I thought the tires would be installed from the factory. Is it different based on time of year or location?

I believe it's based on the type of rim, there are a few different rim options available

Audi contracts with several different tire manufacturers to their specs and tires included on new vehicles are based on the current contract cost and inventory availability at time of assembly. There's virtually no way to predict in advance exactly which tire brand/model a particular new car will have mounted.

Snagit, that's the same explanation I got when I bought by 997 C2S a few years ago. At the time they were shipping with Bridgestone, Michelin or Pirelli.
