Default Questions on winter wheel/tire size options

Yo!

Picked up a new S6 yesterday so I'm scrambling to find winter wheel & tire options for it to replace the oem 20" black optic summer setup.

What width wheel are folks running for snows? The oem wheels are 8.5" wide and I see that's what Tirerack is recommending in their packages along with 255/40/19's, but Audi's winter wheel and tire brochure from last year bundles 7.5" wheels on 235/45/19's. I assume they are allowing for clearances needed for chains? I wont need chains in suburban Philly. I'm just dealing with cold, dry conditions with slippery patches here and there. On my B8 S4 I was running Pilot Alpin 4 on 8.0" rims and they did great in most conditions not so much in the worst winter weather.

Last question - Thoughts on going with a 245/40/19's instead of the recommended 255/40/19's' per Tirerack as an alternate size in order to access Pilot Alpins 5 and/or X-Ice3's?

Closing this out, take-ways:
  1. Audi is OOS on their oem winter wheel package in the northeast so that never was a consideration
  2. Wheels: I went with Hartmann HRS6-091-MA:M 19x8.5 ET38. I've had good experience with them in the past & I didn't want to deal with centering rings and non-oem bolts / hardware, keeping track of them, etc.
  3. Tires: Michelin X-Ice Xi3 in 245/40/19's from Tire Rack. Thanks Damon. I previously had Michelin Pilot Alpin 4's on my B8 S4 but I wanted a little more snow & ice performance this time around.

Default Need advice for winter tires for my 2012 Audi A7

This will be my first winter in eastern Washington and I’m buying winter tires from Les Schwab... maybe not the best choice but I really don’t know much about winter tires. I see in reviews some of the owners are using smaller wheel setups. I’m just curious what has worked best for all the experts. Any info and advice is greatly appreciated.

For starters this is the C7 S6 forum specifically.
The A7 forum is here:

But some info anyway...

Minus sizing can help in several ways:
-The smaller size keeps costs down for winter tire packages and future replacements and or damage.
-A smaller size can be beneficial in truly deep snow conditions. However that is rare for many and usually just driving on either plowed roads or light snow.
-Smaller size usually allows for increased sidewall height which can help in case of newly formed potholes or even low speed slips into curbs.
*On the S6 you have to be careful of fitment. Only certain 19" wheels will fit.

Example:
S6 comes with 255/35/20 summer setup.
The OE winter setup is 235/45/19 so you can see it is 20mm more narrow with 17mm more sidewall.

Why not try building a winter package on Tire Rack...they have several options for the A7.

I am selling my S6 soon and I have this exact setup. 19" wheels with ContiWinter 235/45/19 tires. More sidewall helps deal with annoying winter potholes. I am in NYC/Long Island area but might be willing to ship. PM me if there is any interest. Wheels are currently at my dealer but I plan on getting them back soon to take pictures and such.

i can tell you that Enkei Raijin 19 X 8, 45 mm offset do not fit. With a 6mm spacer the spokes clear with about 0.050 inches and the rim by about 0.035 inches, leaving no room for balance weights.
