Tweaking the stock exhaust for a little more sound....
#32
It appears he deleted the center and rear mufflers and replaced it with a single mid pipe that splits to give a dual exhaust. Doesn't make sense to me. I'd be more inclined to replace either the front two mufflers OR the center muffler with an x-pipe rather than do what this guy did.
The hardest part is getting my wife to agree to this because she likes it quiet and it's her car primarily.

Can you please point to the specific text in the guide you are referring to? I read it in detail the last time this came up and only saw details of noise cancelation, not addition. Using your theory, if I pull the fuse for the stereo, I should hear no growl under acceleration.

The sound actuator system consists of the Structure Borne Sound Control Module J869 and Structure Borne Sound Actuator R214. Various sound files are stored on J869 that are played as a function of vehicle and operating data (load, engine speed, vehicle speed) and forwarded to the actuator.
The actuator generates the structure-borne sound. The sound is then introduced via the body and the windshield to the vehicle interior. The actuator is installed using a special bracket on the left at the base of the windshield. The bracket is the "tuning fork" of the system.
Different vehicles and engiens require different excitation for a balanced engine sound. Information about the engine installed and the body are communicated on the CAN bus and are evaluated. J869 recognizes independently in which vehicle it is installed. The driver can select different sound settings through the MMI"
Now, the last setting I can only imagine is the difference between dynamic and auto(or individual setting for exhaust).

Thanks. I did see that text on page 2 of the thread, but i read that as the actuator and structure making the sound, not the stereo as suggested on the last page.
Also, I'm with your theory on the settings. I run in dynamic and notice the snarl kick in just below 2k rpms. A buddy with an S6 was running individual with dynamic in the exhaust setting and hes only hearing it at higher rpms. If thats not the case, it seems there could be some variation from car to car.
