Do I really need PREMIUM gas in my Q7?

Do I really need PREMIUM gas in my Q7?
I'd like to hear from you folks as to what kind of gas you are puting your Q7s. I have heard from some mecanics that today's cars don't need premium unless you notice knock. I ran regular in my 05 4.2 Allroad and never noticed any problems. However my wife insists on at least mid-grade octane in her A4 3.0 Cab.
What about it? Does it really matter?

Your engine is smart enough that it will de-tune itself so it will not knock even with an 87. However, your engine will be so de-tuned that you will be significantly less fuel effiecient than if you ran the proper octance. You won't be saving any money, and you'll have worse performance to boot.

I think you're wrong on the fuel economy.
I've run regular gas for 6 months now in my Touareg (same engine as Q) and have an identical mpg. The performance loss is significant however and it doesn't magically come back with a fresh tankful of 93.
The Q is completely fine running regular gas but you will feel a little sluggish off the line.

Re: No, but you paid for those ponies.
I've never understood this.
Why do people turn into tightwads at the pump when they don't think twice about supersizing their happy meal or changing their tall into a venti?

basic rules of Audi...
put in cheaper lower octane gas you will get less MPG and lower performance. Put in what is suggested --91 oct. and you will get the performance you want and the MPG will improve as well. So with better MPG from higher oct. you are not spending any more $$

This was an old post...
Also, when running less than recommended octane (in any vehicle), you need to keep driving style in mind. If you tow, run premium, the ECM won't work so hard pulling timing and minimizing knock and your engine will thank you. If you have a heavy right foot, run premium, the ECM won't work so hard pulling timing and minimizing knock and your engine will thank you. If you putt along at the speed limit and dawdle while getting up to speed, run 87 or 89. If you have a Stage 1 or higher ECM map loaded up, you better run premium, or you may get a CEL glowing on the dash.
