Default OEM Tow Hitch Installation

Hi All,

Well yesterday was hitch day and I completed the physical part of getting the hitch installed:

The electrical part I needed to postpone till I had access to a VAG-COM and I also had a few questions about it that hopefully someone on the forum can answer. So here goes...

1) The instructions refer to, "Connect and secure the red 12-way housing from the vehicle (preinstalled on the equipment rack for trailer control unit) to the socket provided on the trailer control unit."

Not sure where this equipment rack is...could it be this pic?

2) The actual brake control unit is shown to be installed at the following location according to the installation guide

However, the area in the US-spec I have does not have a similar layout. I have the following in the rear compartment area:

Default A few Qs

Did you get the hitch from the dealer?

I have a Vag if you're in the Boston area.

Thanks for the pics and write-up. I plan on doing this soon.

I ordered the hitch from gen uinevwaudiparts.com as their aggressive price along with the lack of sales tax easily offset the shipping charge (Craig was great as well). As usual, "brown" a.k.a. UPS destroyed the box but the hitch (minus the sprung plug) was intact.

Unfortunately, I am in Seattle but I appreciate the offer on the VAG-COM.

Removing the bumper was a little outside my comfort zone and Audi has used the "clip" methodology of securing things so you get that wonderful, "keep tugging until it either breaks or pops off" lump in your throat as you remove the pieces.

One trick I did do was when removing the 10mm nuts that attach to the 4 posts that position the bumper to the rear, I cut a strip of duct tape and attached it to the nut. That way, if the nut slips out of your fingers (and it will), it can be fished out easily.

Default I'm in Seattle...

and have a VAGCOM if you need access to one. I'd be curious in learning more about the install, I've been wanting to add a hitch.

Close-up without the hitch cover (need to order) and from the rear.

The main retrofit part number (which includes the tow hitch w/wiring harness, ball and brake controller unit) is 4L0092101U.

The replacement cover (for hitch) is 4L0807819C1RR but may vary depending on the color of your bumper.

Default Perplexed...You already have an EU tow hitch!!!

In this picture you posted you can clearly see the removable hitch in its storage, ready to plug in (complete with spare locking key)!
Is that a different car?
Do you guys get the hitch without the mounting?

Apparently the answer is yes! I was looking at that as well and wondered what it was for. I guess Audi supplied the actual ball without the mount and electrics. I can take a picture of the non-hitch bumper if you want proof!

This is an early '07 (04/06 manu. date) so maybe they were still putting them together with some EU packages.

I guess as the US greenback continues to dive Audi is cutting as much as they can. For example, I am hearing that all the new '08 US Specs are sans the first aid kit.
