Groaning on turns
If the sound is more like a higher pitched groan, then check the steering pump. Have some one turn the wheels in Park, while you place a long vacume line tube or any hose, to hear for a metallic grinding sound.

More info
It happens only at low speeds, and there is no real vibration, although the steering does seem to get harder. I'll check the fluid level, although I hadn't done that yet, because it was just serviced and I figured they had topped it off.

groaning
check if it makes the noise while turning the wheel without the car moving.
if only while moving and tight turning it sounds like the brake pads are "binding", this is becoming very common specially with aftermarket brakes and also when wheel bearings have a lot of miles on them, sometimes it does it while driving straight at very low speed.

Is this new? Old? Temperature? Miles?
1. Is this new/sudden as an issue, or older or gradual in it coming up?
2. Is it temperature related?--cold starts only? All the time? Outside temps lower in general when you notice it?
3. How many total miles on the car?

2 year old thread...but new issue to me...
i just had this same issue a few days after having my front brakes and rotors replaced.
the first few days I only got a very faint humming or vibration sound and gentle rumbling feed back in the steering wheel while turning at very low/parking lot speeds...
today, while driving at highway speeds the vibration felt the same but the sound was a bit louder...it's not consistant but comes and goes...
i think it has something to do with the recent break job but im no "car guy" and a little help would be much appreciated.
i have an 06 A8 w/ 81k on it...

Then you should look at the parts you bought since this issue started after the brake job. What brand/ type of rotors and brake pads did you purchase?
Post some links or provide some information on the parts.
