Well, finally was able to spend some quality time with my A4 and do an oil and filter change. What a pleasure, no crawling under the car it is as simple as it get.

I know that Audi recommends changing the oil at 15,000 kms or one year but just took a 4,500 km trip and feel much better now.

For engine type 2.0 TFSI 252HP A4 B9 MY2017

Parts needed;

5.5 quarts of 5W40 VW 50200

1 filter and ring 06L 115 562

First make sure the engine is warm (operating temperature).
Step one, remove cover, just lift.



Cover removed.
Step 2, remove oil level plug.




Oil level plug.

Insert suction tube until you reach the oil pan.

Begin transfer.




Used oil tranfer.

Unscrew filter housing.



Unscrew filter housing.

Remove old filter and O ring.




Old filter.




O ring.
Replace with new filter and ring. Do not overtight.



New filter and ring.
There was already a mark on the housing to guide the placement of the cap.

I question Audi's choice of placement of the cartridge filter. Doesn't seem like there's a way to prime the filter medium with oil prior to starting the car. Won't the oil pump and or engine get starved while the filter is priming during the initial start up. Can't be good for the oil pump if that happens every oil change.

The reason i mention this is that years ago while hurriedly doing an oil change i forgot to prime a spin on oil filter and the oil pump made a terrible screeching noise while the filter was filling with oil.

Ok, maybe the oil pump is submerged in enough oil that it doesn't suck air while the filter is priming. Hoping that's the case.

Also noticed you didn't show a picture that you smeared a little oil on the new o-ring. Maybe you did it and just didn't post a pic. Probably a good idea to do that if you didn't to lessen the chance of the cartridge housing leaking.

This thread is a very good How-to. A mod should make it a sticky because it shows all relevant info including procedure and part #'s.

You are correct, I have smeared some oil on the 0-ring but thought about the picture after I had re-installed the new filter.

Also the oil capacity cannot be found in the owner's manual, Audi Canada has an error on their PDF maintenance sheet, they list the oil capacity as 4.7 quarts which is wrong, 5.5 quarts is the right amount.

In the A4 B8 version the oil filter was a metal enclosed filter. Easy to remove and easy to replace. I am surprised that the A4 B9 that Audi decided to go with a cartridge filter. Can anyone suggest the rational for this change in the type of oil filter?

Am no expert but weight and cost could be one, in recent years all car makers have been trying to shed weight off their models, I know that an oil filter isn't much but combine this with other parts and the sum might bring interesting reduction.

Was the filter on the B8 under or above the engine like the B9?

Really nothing hard about changing the cartridge filter, it drains completely, removes as a unit and very easy to replace.

My guess is minimizing waste to recycle was a motivation, you only dispose of the filter.
