Default Random Electrical Issues Has my Q down!

Hello,
I guess this is a follow up to a previous post on an issue which I still have not solved (https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q7-...stion-2786004/). Please forgive the long post, but I feel a complete background of my issues is necessary.
I have a 2008 Q7 Premium, 3.6 purchased used from a dealer about 2 years ago now. Lately I have started experiencing more and more strange electrical and mechanical problems that I’m trying to nail down but can’t. I've been doing quite a bit of research, but every time a new issue pops up, I find myself running in a different direction and I feel like I’m chasing my tail.

I’ll start from the beginning when I purchased the car from the dealership. I noticed the tailgate open indicator on the dash, but being an in-experienced Q7 owner, and the picture not the best, I had no idea what it meant. When I asked the salesman, he assured me everything was in working order and even went as far as to show me that the hatch opened and closed properly and the tail lights initialized when the lid was closed. This eventually turned out to be an intermittent problem which I did not become fully aware of until I facelifted the tail lights to the LED version lights (my previous posts). Sometimes the tail lights in the hatch worked, other times the lights in the bumper took over, and depending on how many times I opened and closed the trunk lid, or re-started the car, the trunk open indicator would come on in the instrument cluster. Replacing the switch didn’t work. Funny enough, with the car running and the hatch open, if I stuck my fingers in there and manually activated the switches, the trunk lid open indicator went off and the lights reverted back to the ones on the hatch. I assumed at that point that the hatch might be misaligned, so I put some double-sided tape on the hatch to make sure the sensor actuators were being pushed in far enough, but that didn’t work for me either. I lived with the issue, since the car ran great and I was having no other issues…until one day, the lane change assist feature stopped working. While driving, the feature would disable itself and give me that audible and visual warning “Audi side assist system fault”. This was random at first, but got progressively worse until the system just completely stopped working. Every once in a while I could get it to work if I pressed the button repeatedly with the driver side door open, and no open hatch indicator on the dash, but soon after it would disable itself again. It was suggested to me that the system works in conjunction with the trunk latch system as a safety precaution, so if the trunk lid open indicator comes on, the side assist feature would automatically disable itself as well. This winter, I noticed if the temperature fell below 30 degrees, the ABS/ESP warning light would come on. When the temperature went back up the problem would disappear.

Recently, I’ve been experiencing some random strange issues. I only drive the car on the weekends, so it sits from Monday to Friday. I have never had a low or draining battery issue. She always starts right up. Last week I went to drive the car and noticed the CEL on. The car drove fine however. When I got back home, I used my VAG-COM to pull the codes and clear the CEL. Here is what I got...

A week later I go for a short drive and the CEL is back, but this time the car is sputtering and stumbling. After a few miles of driving, the CEL starts to flash! (Definitely not good). I shut her off, and back on again and the stumbling went away, but the CEL is still on (not flashing this time). After gingerly limping it back home, I got on the computer to do some research and the next morning tried a few things (New air filter, cleaned the hell out of the MAF, and Techtron in the tank). Used the VAG-COM again and pulled these codes…

While doing the full scan I noticed that several modules indicated “could not be reached” by the VAG-COM. This time when trying to clear the codes, the CEL would not clear. It took 4 or 5 attempts before the CEL went out. However, at that point, the ABS/ESP light and warning came on and stayed on (still on now). There are so many different random fault codes, that my head is spinning now, most I notice are due to low voltage. Not to mention my MMI is on its way out as the Bluetooth randomly drops out and the audio intermittently cuts out.

I came across some posts and other info referring to relays and fuse/fuse box issues with water leaks and voltage regulator possibly being an issue. I was getting water in the passenger AND driver side foot wells at one point, but I thought I took care of that by clearing out the drains. However, one day after a rain, I saw a small pool of water gathered on the retractable canopy for the trunk area on the driver side. I had never seen this before and was worried it might be coming from someplace where there are vital electronics located.

If anyone has experienced even a part of what is going on with my Q7 I’d love to hear what you’ve tried. Any direction would be appreciated.

Blimey, you do have a range of issues there.

If the door handle sensors are shorting to ground they will cause various systems to stay active when parked which will draw a constant current. This will drain the battery when parked.

If the battery voltage is low when the engine is started it will cause lots of issues such as what you are seeing.

Don't ignore the water leaks, especially the one at the rear - check round the spare when and all the electrics in the rear right hand side where the Bose amp is etc...

I would clear the whole lot of codes and then charge the battery overnight and see what re-occurs.

I have three faulty door handles and I know that I cannot leave the car for a week because it may well not start but I don't want the cost of replacing the three handles - it's just not worth it to me.

Default Thanks for the Speedy Reply!

Thanks for the reply,

I was hoping to get some good weather this weekend so I could spend a good part of the day digging into things. I'll check the door handles for sure. I actually started using the smart key function about 6 months ago when I realized my Q had that feature. I felt it was very convenient, especially when I went to the supermarket, that I didn't have to pull the key out to lock or unlock the vehicle. But after a while, the thumb button lock feature stopped working. I could grab the door handle once and the unlock feature still works, but when I tried to lock the vehicle using the door handle, one door after the other stopped working. When the driver door stopped working, I started using the driver side back door, then that one stopped working. And so on till now none of the door handles will lock the vehicle. I also noticed at that point that sometimes the vehicle would lock by itself without me pressing the lock button on the remote, and started acting erratically, but never thought the door handles would cause such a catastrophe!

I'll definitely dig into this this weekend. Is there any mechanical diagrams available of the door handle system that might help me with disassembly

Thanks again for all the help, I'll keep this post updated as I progress.

Oh BTW, is there a way of replaciing individual components of the door handle instead of replacing the entire assembly? It seems it would be a major pain in the but to have to get the door handle painted!

The door handles have two main parts. There is a thin plastic cover over the inner edge and that removes quite easily. Once that is off, you think it's going to be easy to get to the button but it's not. It looks like the whole assembly is pressure filled with resin so it is nigh on impossible to repair and replacement is the only option.

I suspect the problem is caused by the flexible part of the lock button cracking and allowing moisture in which then causes the lock to short to ground with the effect that it behaves as if you are continually pressing the lock button. This may well be the reason for the high quiescent current reported in your fault logs.

Understood! Thanks again for the insight! I read somewhere that some guys were "cutting" the wire for the sensor instead of spending the money replacing the handles. I don't want to cut any wires, i'd rather disconnect if possible. I'll dig into it this weekend and post a followup of what I come up with.

Again, thank you for the direction!

So I went out last Saturday early to dig into this issue. First thing I did was the door handles. Tackled the driver side front first. Was able to pull the handle out easily enough. Found 3 wires running from the handle, no connector. So I see now why the wires were being cut by some. So...I cut them and tied them off with electrical tape. Had a bear of a time getting the handle reinstalled! That metal tab that you're supposed to pull out with a hook to allow the lock to come out just would not go back. I wiggled, lifted, pulled, pushed and still would not go all the way back to it's original position.

Did the same for the other 3 handles as I was getting codes for all of them. What baffled and surprised me was that, after cutting all the wires, the door locks still opened when pulling the handle!!! I honestly thought everything would stop working after the wires were cut, but I guess the wires are strictly for the sensor.

Next I located the 3 fuse boxes and pulled every fuse. Fuse boxes look good, no visible corrosion. I did find that the driver side footwell was SOAKED! I've had this issue before but thought it was taken care of when I cleared the drains. The problem went away, but has cropped up again, I guess due to some North East winter driving. I've seen a few posts about water in the passenger side footwell, but I couldn't find anyone who had water in the driver side.

When I inspected the fuse box on the driver side, I found moisture, not a lot of water on some of the fuses. Cleaned and dried all that up. Hooked up the Vag Com and pulled the codes, again a long list. Again took me 4 or 5 tried to clear the CEL. Still have the ESP/ABS lights. Took her for a drive, and 5 min in to the drive engine starts to shudder, loss of power, limp mode, CEL flashing. Pulled the codes and this is what I got:

Tried her again on Sunday. CDL on solid, but no limp mode. Tooled around for the better part of the morning, and felt better, look down and low and behold, CEL is out. Decided to beat around some more till early evening. Other than the ESP/ABS light, everything seemed OK drive-ability wise. Besides that, I was trying to activate the green menu in MMI, but got an error message, cannot communicate with the controller. I believe there are several other modules that have given communication errors when using the Vag Com.

Default Follow up Question

Still researching this ongoing issue and came across some things that I hope I can get some light shed on and narrow down my issue.

Decided to take the Q for a ride on Monday for about a 30 mile drive. After about 2 or 3 miles, started stumbling under load acceleration and the CEL started flashing. If I took my foot off the gas and "babied" it, the flashing CEL would go away.

Now, I've been reading up on a specific problem with a weird combination of the ESP/ABS light and the random misfires. Seems strange, but there seems to be quite a bit on this specific combination of issues, which I am experiencing.

My next move was to throw a new MAF sensor at it, but was wondering if there was anything anyone could suggest to test or check to make sure?

Thanks in advance

unplug the MAF, if its giving bad readings unplugging it will force it to resort to default air/fuel mapping.. it'll run better unplugged if its giving erroneous readings, but not great as if it was a good MAF with correct readings.

If you have a VCDS there are measuring blocks you can find tha'll show you MAF airflow readings; might log it along with RPM, graph them both and see if it goes sideways at any point.

Thanks dreadlocks,

Was planning on unplugging the MAF this weekend to see what I got. She doesn't run rough when at idle though (in park), only while driving after several miles. Even when the CEL starts flashing, if I pull over and put her in park, she seems to idle OK, no noticeable roughness. Only get the symptoms when accelerating.

I'll try digging into the VCSD some more and see if I can find those blocks. I'm still concerned about those modules that VCSD says cannot communicate with though.
