I just had an engine light come on about 2 weeks ago on my TDI. Service department said a connection of a hose on the egr had come loose.
On a gasoline powered vehicle, first thing to check is that your gas cap is loose, not tightened.

marlena where are you located ? You need to get your vehicle plugged into a scanner at ideally a good independant garage. If they're using generic OBD scanners you may just get a code eg "P0400" that's just an example probably nothing to do with your situation.Get your code and come back here and we can likely guide you.

It means you broke your car. Put it out for recycling and order a new one.
If the car is still under warranty, get it to a dealer before that expires and have it taken care of. Before that warranty expires or something really bad happens.
If the car is not under warranty, get it to an independent shop or an auto chain (Pep Boys, Advance, Auto Zone) where they will use a diagnostic tool, free at most chains, or lend it to you for free, to find the error code. The tool plugs into a socket "under" the dash board, the only hard part if getting down on the ground and sticking your hand under there to see where the socket is.
The engine light can mean something trivial, like the loose gap cap mentioned. Or, it could mean you are about to slag down the engine and break something terribly expensive. Either way, it pays to find out the problem QUICKLY so you can take appropriate action.

Thanks for tips. I have made an appointment with local Audi dealer as it doesn't appear to be gas cap, but something is apparently malfunctioning. Service department said it's fine to drive as long as car is driving normally and light is on steadily; but if flashing, to pull over and call for a tow.
Just a minor glitch, I hope!
