Q7, would you buy again?
Hello everyone! So, I currently own a 2016 GLE 350 and well, it does not live up to standards. I've sat passenger in a q7 and loved it but wanted to get a feel from owners. I'd probably go for the prestige package unless others can tell me why not (It's a luxury purchase and a trade in with my gle 350 so I want to get the most out of my money).
1. How is the gear shifting? is it always smooth regardless of slow/fast/overtaking acceleration patterns? My GLE has extremely hard shifts, mainly due to adaptive transmission. I don't want the transmission to learn because I have mixed driving habits; I Want raw power in sport/smash the gas/highway and smooth comfort when I'm driving in the city.
2. How's the handling? Sport vs comfort, big differences in acceleration and steering stiffness?
3. How are the electronics? I am an iphone user and my main apps are spotify/music and google maps. I want to be able to use those apps, with or without phone, efficiently and without too many bugs. Does the Q7 accomplish this?
4. Headlights. Which are the best? Huge mistake going with halogen in the GLE, yeap, standard options.
5. What extra options are a must? Pricing?
6. Reliability and maintenance?
7. Anyone have any news on the 2018 model?
8. Would you buy this vehicle again?
Thanks!

I would buy the car again. Transmission is very smooth. I find the supercharger engagement to be a bit abrupt. "Raw power" and an SUV is a bit of an oxymoron. Very comfortable smooth driving vehicle. Electronics are outstanding.

I know raw power and SUV is a bit of an oxymoron, but it's also a supercharged v6 so it should outpace the Honda accord next to me (my current vehicle sometimes struggles to figure out gears, resulting in a lackluster acceleration..it literally crawls or jerks 50 feet forward). Your info is much appreciated! I'm hoping others share the same sentiment!

1) Shifts are very smooth to a fault. The engine and tranny work great together. I never felt hard shifts in the ML either btw
2) Huge difference between comfort and sport. With sport the Q loves to fly and the steering stiffens up. Comfort is fine too
3) electronics is what the Q is about. The Q has Apple CarPlay so you can connect it but its limited in the apps but thats an apple issue. Otherwise get the Vision Package, its what makes the Q cool
4) Halogens have long passed their time. I feel the LEDs are the way to go because they the latest, although I'm not sure the Q's LEDs are very great.
5) Options are personal/budget driven, but Vision, cold weather, warm weather, Drivers Assistance are a must have. If in your budget, go for the Prestige model as that will give you HUD, interior lighting choices, and soft close doors for 2018 model
6) No clue, will find out
7) you can order a 2018 now
8) so far, yes.

Would buy again in a heartbeat. The Q aint no slouch. Ran a 14.6 in quarter mile. Thats hot hatch times. Also put the hurt on a durango hemi at the track as well. For comparo a smaller porsche macan ran a 15.1 O_O. There are some tech bugs every now and again but its a computer on wheels so expect it. Love my Q.

1 - super smooth shifts regardless of the situation
2 - Nimble is the word. The handling is excellent all around (incl. on snow covered roads). The difference between Confort and Dynamic is quite noticeable: a slight brush of the accelerator in dynamic and you'll be flying already + the ride stiffens a bit but not to the extent of being uncomfortable (I have the air suspension). But this is not a sport car, you are still moving 2 tons, but the illusion is pretty good.
3 - I don't use carplay, but the MMI is good while the GPS input is a bit dum. HUD and virtual cockpit are musts.
4 - definitely go with the vision package (360 camera+LED+... / another recent thread covers the reasons why), and I feel the LED headlights work very well, but some report being disapointed (Im not sure why - there is not comparison with the alternative).
5 - I would go with everything EXCEPT: the B/O sound (way overpriced and the Bose is great), IR camera (unless you live in the woods :-)), the fancy seats with massage, and the 21in wheels.
6 - I only have 6000 Km on it and zero problem ... so that does not mean much.
7 - there is a thread opened on that (2018 pricing guide). As far as I can tell, not much difference with 2017.
8 - ABSOLUTELY. We love this car. driver and passenger.
