Default Is this $4060 SQ5 Warranty Worth It?

Hi All,
I am about to purchase an out of warranty 2014 SQ5. I was quoted $4160 for 36K miles /48 months. I was able to get the finance manager to knock off $100.

This is the Gold Coverage from the Audi dealership that supposedly covers 99% of issues with no deductible.

I was at my bank yesterday looking to buy a much cheaper warranty through Route 66 (for ~$1500) but discovered it only covered powertrain.

My question to those knowledgeable on the subject is $4k a fair price for piece of mind on the type of car? My current car for 11 years has been an ACURA TL with 230k miles. It's still running and refuses to break lol. I will end up keeping both cars so I don't run up the miles on the SQ5.

Thanks!

You can buy the warranty from any Audi dealer. E-mail several Audi dealers and ask them to quote you a price on the warranty you want. Then take the lowest quote to your local dealer and ask them if they will match it. If they won't, just buy the warranty from the dealer with the lowest quote. I saved over $1K by doing this. Bear in mind that the mark-ups on extended warranties are huge so dealers have a lot of leeway on the price they can sell them for. Good luck!

The V6 TFSI engine found in the SQ5 is quite reliable. I barely read postings from owners about running into issues with it. I am a member of several Audi forums and forums are great places to visit to find out about complaints or problems. I am not saying that nothing will breakdown eventually. Obviously, wear and tear items will need to be replaced but such is life. However, while the SQ5 seems to be very reliable, do not discount any fluke or one-off incidents that may occur on your particular vehicle.

If you do not plan to drive the car a whole lot, I suggest just keeping the money and continue saving enough money to build up a reserve for unexpected repairs. How much money, I think targeting a savings of $5k to 10k within a span of 5 years would put yourself at ease. Don't touch this money for anything other than repairs to your SQ5 or unforseen personal emergencies. If you eventually sell your SQ5, you can keep any unused portion.

How did I arrive at the $5k to $10k figure? I used the Audi Extended Warranty brochure's list of items covered under the policy and identified possible things that can go wrong that may need replacing or repair. Think of the worst case scenario, say, the engine needs to be replaced. I did some research and it is possible to buy a complete used engine for around $3 to $5k. Add in Labour, then the total may be around $8k. Water pump, suspension parts, chain tensioner/timing chain replacement each amount to probably around less than $3k to fix. So, a savings $10k would really put your mind at ease. The key to the longevity of the this car (SQ5) is regular maintenance.

I do recommend considering Audi Care instead. With Audi Care, you prepay the regular maintenance services up front. It comes out much cheaper compared to paying for each service a-la-carte. If you have an independent Audi mechanic you trust, have them quote you for each regular maintenance service and compare it to the cost of Audi Care. Then, you can decide which is most practical in terms of finances and convenience.

One of the things, aside from having an repair fund or extended warranty on your vehicle, to put your mind at ease is to do research about the SQ5 here in these forums. You will find that there is very little to no issues that plague it that would burn a hole in your pocket in a heart beat as soon as you start enjoying it.

Another suggestion: Instead of considering an Extended warranty, it may be prudent to consider having the vehicle CPO'd instead. I think it may still qualify for CPO status. CPO will extended the warranty for two years which gives you some time to build up a repair fund or decide whether to purchase an extended warranty. Remember, no matter how good a used car looks including its low mileage, you still do not know how the original owner treated the car. CPO would put those concerns to rest for, at least, two years.

If you do decide to purchase an extended warranty, I suggest to add a deductible instead of 0 deductible. Take on part of the risk by, say, having a deductible of $500 or $1000. The cost of that warranty will be less. Again, the SQ5 is not known to be a headache so there is really no need for having a $0 deductible. This is just my opinion. Yours may differ depending on how you feel.

Plat27265,
Thanks for the detailed response. I did fail to mention that this SQ5 has 85k miles on it. It has detailed maintenance records from the dealer.

I briefly looked at AudiCare and I think 85k miles is way above what will be covered.

I did look into having a $100 deductible but it was only a $200 difference. I will call other Audi dealers to see if I can get a better offer.

Thanks.

Jim,
So I called two nearby Audi dealers for a quote. Here is the first reply I got. It's more expensive that my original quote. Even with deductibles.

Here is the information that you requested about the service contract. Attached is a copy of the brochure. You can finance the plan up to 18 months at 0% interest with 10% down.

This quote is valid until 90,000 miles.

You will need a prepurchase inspection to check for any preexisting conditions before signing your service contract. The cost of this inspection is between $275 and $300, which will be deducted from your service contract price if you choose to purchase one of the plans below.

$100 deductible – Gold

4 years or 48,000 miles $ 7123

3 years or 36,000 miles $ 6077

2 years or 24,000 miles $ 4983

$250 deductible – Gold

4 years or 48,000 miles $ 6065

3 years or 36,000 miles $ 5159

2 years or 24,000 miles $ 4307

$100 deductible – Silver

4 years or 48,000 miles $ 5701

3 years or 36,000 miles $ 4951

2 years or 24,000 miles $ 4078

$250 deductible – Silver

4 years or 48,000 miles $ 4942

3 years or 36,000 miles $ 4292

2 years or 24,000 miles $ 3731

$100 deductible – Powertrain

4 years or 48,000 miles $ 4879

3 years or 36,000 miles $ 4194

2 years or 24,000 miles $ 3565

$250 deductible – Powertrain

4 years or 48,000 miles $ 4293

3 years or 36,000 miles $ 3738

2 years or 24,000 miles $ 3339

My experience was with a brand new ED 2016 SQ5 so no pre-purchase inspection was required. If the inspection is mandatory with out-of-warranty vehicles (and I suspect it is), then that changes the ball game. I don't know how many Audi dealers are within a reasonable driving distance from your residence, but even if you have several dealers, the cost of multiple inspections makes this strategy unworkable. You might consider following plat27265's suggestion above and see if you can get the vehicle CPO'd. I assume you've done a VIN check to see about any accident history which would not necessarily show up in the dealer's maintenance records.

The car is up for sale by a Porsche dealership, the same dealership that sold the car new. It had just one owner. It has been serviced by the same dealership that originally sold it. Please see the carfax below. All Maintenance inspection were completed by Audi, 5k, 15k, 25k, 35k, 45k, 55k, 75k, 85 intervals, except 65k. A 140 point inspection test was completed last month. It has been on sale for at least a month and the price dropped 3k since listed.

I am about to pay $275 to have a PPI done as well.

Thanks!

It's not eligible. Below is Troy's response. Thanks!

"Unfortunately, I can only sell the Audi / Fidelity plans online on vehicles that are still within the original 4 yr / 50,000 mile factory warranty."
