Another MMI thread...with VCDS results...assistance desperately needed
Hello everyone, yes I know, another MMI thread…yes I’ve done research, yes I’ve watched all the youtube videos, yes I’ve purchased the bypass optical ring, yes I have VCDS, and I’m still stumped 
Really need your help to figure this out as its driving me nuts!
When I purchased my a8, the MMI was not working, I purchased knowing that, so its not a surprise in any way, but now many months later, id really like to get it fixed as I’m missing having music and all the other setting I can mess wth on the MMI system.
So heres my story, my screen stays open at all times, the boot screen will come on only when I press whatever button, it will boot, then turn back off after about 15 seconds or so, I’ve tried the 3 button reset more times then I can remember now.
Weirdest part is after I had purchased the car without it working, one day it all randomly started working! Screen would open and close as needed, the entire system worked from the suspension setting, to nav, music, radio and everything! It worked for about 3-4 hours, then stopped again
Ive done the VCDS optical test and this is what I get
With the research I’ve done, I thought Media Player 1 was the CD changer in the glove box, so I purchased the bypass ring, unplugged the power to the CD changer and plugged in the bypass tool, nothing changed still no MMI, still boots for 15 seconds then turns off, but when I install the bypass ring it says this on the optical test
I have already removed, completely taken apart and cleaned the center console switch panel, the day when it randomly worked, every button had power and worked as it should, so Im hoping this is not my issue
So after this not solving anything, I tried to bypass every module one by one, to see if maybe it was another module, the 2 behind the glovebox, and the rest in the trunk on the drivers side, every time I would unplug the power to the module and install the bypass ring, still nothing changed, so I even tried leaving the power plugged in and installing the bypass ring, and STILL nothing changed, I’ve checked every fuse in the car possible, and none of them are blown, the battery was a new battery, so I made sure it was coded to the car, and still nothing changed
Please help guys, I’m out of ideas, I don’t know what else to check anymore

Hello AAO,
Please clear all codes one by one, Not with the "clear all codes" function, but 1 x 1, as your scan does not match to your optical readout, as 07 shows good in optic RO, but shows "can not be reached" in the scan.
The reason I ask for you to clear all is because out of 34 modules in your scan, 29 have faults...... and being you did not post the actual scan read out of each module, we can not know what is old or current.
Just a few thoughts as I read your thread a few time to get your flow of what you have done so far, you say that you bypassed both modules behind the glove box, well one of them is the MMI control head and can not be bypassed as it is the CH itself, which would render you with nothing, also I do not understand why you would be disconnecting the power to any module when installing the optical (LIGHT) bypass ring, you are only bypassing the optic, not the power, So PLEASE clear all the faults and start over with a new scan and optical read out, I have worked on quite a few MMI systems, and the majority of them were bad MMI control heads, with only one being the stuck button problem, others have had the Bose amp as the cause of the MMI shutting down, so do the clearing and repost scan and output test, ALSO if you could post some pictures of each module in the trunk so that we may see that you are in fact bypassing the correct units.

sorry about the confusion, i cleared all the codes, then did a scan of the entire system, and did another optical scan, the optical scan did not change

Hello,
I take it that you did not reset the clock, and date as it shows the year 2003, ALSO it looks as you did not clear all the codes one by one in each module after you started disconnecting said modules, as the fault dates are June 17th,18, 19th, and the 20th, along with some from today July 4th, you MUST clear all the past codes that most likely resulted from you unplugging things in June.

What you have to realize is that the MOST bus is a ring. In other words, a failure anywhere will cause all the components on the ring to fail. What you have to do is the bypass each item individually. I would start with the amplifier, then the satellite radio, etc.

richard - I realize that, I've already done that, bypassed each module one by one and nothing changed
i noticed one of the modules says "protection active" or something like that, could that also be my problem? Can I reset a protection on a module?

As far as the CP=component protection, no you yourself car not remove it with any tool, such as RT, but some online can, or you can take it to the dealer for about $120-$150 to have it removed by way of hooking up to the Mother Ship, BUT at this time I do not think that #17 instrument cluster with CP being "active" is your problem as it shows intermittent, which is odd, but again if the vehicle is running and the instrument cluster is functioning fully, then I see no problem there, I have my brand new from dealer Can-Bus module in CP since the day I installed it and it works fully, just a note, the dealer parts dept. nor the service tech could explain how a new in box item had CP active, But back to you, I would clear all the faults when you have time, also make sure that you plugged everything back in correctly, then do a new scan and optical/electrical test and post them, what DOES bother me is that you said that you already did the optic bypass one at a time, if that IS the case and and you did that procedure correctly with the power plugs all plugged in, then I am going to go with you needing a new or used MMI CH, if you buy used off EBay or anywhere used, then you have a 50/50 chance of the used replacement MMI CH going into CP, which will require a trip to the dealer as stated above, or others on here know of a guy who can do it online with access to your laptop and vehicle, in case you did not know, when the MMI CH goes into CP, all the functions of MMI will work, but you will have no sound, the MMI screen will show the speaker muted, OR you could get lucky and get a used MMI CH from Europe at A8Parts (CARL) which I did and had no CP, and did not go into CP when I installed it, but I did have to flash it from Euro to NA.
You have my number if you need me to walk you though anything, I am in Jersey so time of day is a factor.

I did not see anywhere if you stated what year your A8 is, so here is a MMI CH that will fit 2004-10, as it has the green FBAS connector for video input such as RVC if you have a 07-09, or you retrofit RVC into a 04-06 model.
