Default My 20" Nokian winter Q7 tires

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9.

Size is 255/50R20. I got them from eBay for $952 delivered.

Here is the best tire review I have found, although from 2015 so you need to read between the lines:

Default Nice

I'll be getting the same tire. Since I'll be getting new wheels trying to decide on 18", 19" or 20"

20 inch has fewer options and they cost more.

Get something in a size that Audi offers as OEM in Europe.

Nice tires! Like them.
P.S. Ahh... Studded tires are not allowed in Minnesota, - like our winters are not good enough to have them permitted! Duh!

really...New Jersey is okay from November 15 to April 1, which is fine.

MN only allows them for non-residents.

I appreciated the original post. It really swayed my decision -- I was going to go with the OEM winter package from my local Audi dealer but he wanted $2995 for a wheel and tire set up with Pirelli Scorpions. I have seen great reviews about Nokian tires and I ended up ordering the Nokian R2 255/55 R19 (and purchased a new set of wheels) for my 2017 Prestige. My existing wheels are the 21's. I live in Portland, Oregon. Most winters we don't have snow but we had 9 days of snow that shut the city down last year. If I had the all seasons tires I think I would have taken my chances but with summer tires on the Q7 and my R8 I don't want to be stranded. I am eager to take the Q7 and actually look for snow this winter to see how they do up in the mountains, etc..

We don't have enough snow to warrant the studs -- I hope that the studless 19 inch R2's will still rip thru the snow.

You will be fine with the non-studable R2’s. I live in Spokane and drive to the mountains nearly every weekend in the winter to ski. I ran Blizzak DM-V1 275/45-20 on my 2011 Q7 and plan to run them on my 2018 Q7 BOP. The tires make the car nearly unstoppable. Snow/ice is on par with my 3/4 ton GMC pickup I used to have.

Studded tires are overkill imho for those that live in areas that only intermittently get snow. I hate the noise as well as what they do to the roads.

The R2’s are arguably even better winter tires than the Blizzaks. I plan to replace my Blizzaks with R2’s once they wear out.

Studs don’t help on snow at all. They are not for snow.

Studs are for ice. And not overkill for ice. The whole idea is that if you hit a patch of ice, you are fine if you have stuffs. If you don’t have them, you are done.

I didn't mind the noise. My friend didn’t notice it either. There is a new Finnish standard for stud noise and the new Nokian and General 12s meet it.
