Default Steering wheel: 10 and 2 or 9 and 3?

It has come to my attention recently that I am holding the steering wheel in the wrong position when I drive. I place my hands at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock position. However, all of the videos I watch involving high-performance driving show the drivers using the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock hand positions. This would make sense, especially when you note where the paddle shifters are placed.

However, I have tried using the 9 and 3 position and not only do I find it a little uncomfortable, I don't feel as in control of the car, especially at high speed.

But I must be wrong because I recently watched a video showing a face-off between an Audi RS5 and a Mercedes AMG (forgot which model) on a banked track, and the driver reached 175 mph in the Merc, holding the wheel at 9 and 3.

Which position do you guys use?

Found his arguments unconvincing (and long-winded). But I'm willing to give it a try for awhile.

My driving instructor, back in... 1999 (gah, I'm old), said 10 and 2. 9-3 was in the media back then, but there was a good reason they favoured 10-2... which, of course, I don't remember.

Default 10&3

I read an AAA article a couple years ago about 10 & 2 vs. 9 & 3. One of the reasons mentioned that modern autos with drivers side airbags frequently caused “degloving” (violent and sudden pealing of the skin off the hand) when the airbag deployed on a driver holding the wheel at 10 and 2. That visual was enough for me to adopt 9 and 3....

As a former Fire captain on my city fire department (retired little over a year ago) I have seen hundreds of people in the many wrecks I responded to beat up by airbags and seatbelt tensioners. My engine was primary response to 8 miles of 6 lane highway and although these safety systems may cause some injuries the occupants faired better than older cars without them. Yes I've seen some skinned up and broken forearms from being on top of the wheel so I definitely keep my hands at 9 and 3 or lower.
