Default Should I buy another one?

I am getting rid of my 2002 coupe. I can just not rely on it to get me to work on a regular basis. But, I love the cars and would even buy a MK 2 if I thought the reliably has increased. On mine I went through a turbo and complete suspension refresh at 90,000 miles. I could even live with that, but the dozens of other issues that are still coming has had me throw my hands up (now has 116,000). I know I am not alone. Everyone I have met has had similar problems (maybe not the turbo).

So, did Audi get their act together after the first dew years?

My 2001 was in the shop about every 9 months. Fortunately, I had an extended warranty. My 2004 was trouble free. (I keep my cars until about 90K miles). However, the Mk 1 had many chronic issues and I was fortunate not to have any of them on the 2004. The Mk 2 reliability has been excellent. If you read this FAQ Fourtitude.com - MK2 TT a5 FAQ you will be looking for a 2011+ MY. There are 2 things to look for when buying a Mk 2. First, I'd avoid cars with mag ride. Not all Mk 2s had mag ride but there have been several posts in the past year of the mag-ride shocks leaking after about 7 years (it seems to be age, not mileage). Replacement is about $6K and most folks are converting back to standard shocks which is still expensive but not as much. Second, check the running, brake, and turning lights on the rear fenders. If one side is dimmer than the other it indicates a major failure in the light assembly connector and the light assembly will have to be replaced.
