Default Miles remaining when car hits 0 miles left...

I let my Q7 go to 0 miles left. I then drove 0.5 - 1.0 miles to a gas station and filled it. It took 20.602 gallons.

Tank capacity is 22.5 gallons, so car had 1.9 gallons left. My average MPG is 18.1, but my worst tank was 15.8.

15.8 * 1.9 is 30.02 - 1.0 is 29.
18.1 * 1.9 is 34.4 - 1.0 is 33.4.

So, when car hits 0, I can still drive at least 29 miles, but more likely 33.

What this tells me is - don't bother refueling when the low-fuel light comes on, as I have been doing. Just wait for it to go to 0.

So an SQ5 on 0 miles left is equal to a fully charged Nissan Leaf.

I'm oddly nervous about this since I re calibrated the mileage meter. But yeah I figure I can get at least 20 miles after zero. Probably as much as 40-50 (if I'm on the highway).

I went about 10 past the other day and put 21 gallons in. (so another 1.5 gallons would get another 30 miles at 20 mpg), which would be about 40 past.

This is good info to know..

However, for me, I can't remember the last time I saw the low fuel light come on in any of my current or previous vehicles. Actually, it's very rare I let the tank go too far below a 1/4 before I refuel.. Just something I have been doing since I first got my license a very long time ago..

I too never let the fuel get too low, thanks to the dealer who sold me my first BMW (and German car). She said, never let the fuel get too low in these German cars...if the light comes on, refuel. So I've rarely ever let any of my cars get to 0 range. The Q usually gets refueled around 30-45 left

Considering the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel, I think it would be pretty bad if you actually go completely dry. Probably not lasting damage unless you do it repeatedly, but why take a chance?

I'm not sure if thats the case on modern cars, but the fuel sediment was the issue I was explained. Who knows, it kinda stuck with me. But its not like I'm looking to run my cars dry for the fun of it anyway. I have 3 cars that take premium, and there are 3 gas stations in the area that charge a "fair" price, while most others charge anywhere from 20-50 cents more per gallon. So anytime I'm near any of the "fair" stations, I'll fill up the tank(s)
