Default When you have a lemon make a lemonade :-)

Hi everyone newbie to Audi this forum and to ross-vcds .

I bought my A8 quattro 4.2 (d3) 07 at the beginning of August ( don’t know why Audi I am more of a BMW driver , 325e and 740il were very satisfying and reliable for me in the past ). When I inspected the car it looked ok and drove nice everything was ok with it ( the engin and trany worked smoth, CD changer didn’t work, right back door didn’t open from outside ), and for a few thousand km. the car was ok ( I bought the car with 120k km on the odometer now I am at 127,766 now) as new to this vehicle and with all the features on it I read the Owner Manual so I can get the bearings on operating it properly.

The first repair I did was to buy a used CD changer and did it at the authorized dealer who serviced the car for the prior owner ( at the same time I got his service history , regular service history last year at 109k and on Jan. 119k).

At around 125k the dashboard coolant light came up , I stopped the car at a gas station let it cool and checked the reservoar , it was missing coolant .Checked under the car to see if there is any liquid leaking ( none) tried to smell any coolant odor or any other odor (none) added regular water as they didn’t have G12 coolant , and continue driving the car as the light on the dashboard was off after adding water.

About 500 km later the coolant light came up again and the reservoar was low again ( about 1 liter) this time I added coolant G12+ ( I was prepared as I bought a G12+, 1 qr of oil for emergency and keep it in the trunk) . I checked again under the car for leaks and try to smell that distinct coolant odor again none can be find . Aded coolant ( I thought that maybe because last time I added water and not coolant that's why it was missing ) . 500 km later light came up again, and the same checks ( I forgot to mention that I checked engine oil as well each time nothing was missing and no discoloration). I made an appointment to check this mystery with the dealer ( as stated in the owner's manual if the light repeat coming take it to dealer immediately) .

The repair : they checked the car and found two coolant hoses that have to be replaced , but one they have in stock and another hose they have to order from Germany as there isn’t one that they can find and it might take a month to get it 0-:. I couldn't believe it as the hose that is missing is going to the alternator first time heard of it had to check it while i was checking it (google it ;-0 ) I came to audi usa and looked at the part ( a friend of mine later bought the part and sent to me ) .After a week that the car was at the dealer I brought the part to them so they can install it . (looking back with what I know now they didn’t even connected the vag-com ) . A week later (and not even 500 km) the light came up again :-( , luckily I was near the dealer when the light came up and drove right to them with light on . they accepted the car opened a service card and put it on a lift to cool down .( this time I insisted that I want to see what they are doing ) they checked the cooling line with a pressure device that they connected to the reservoar, lifted the car and checked the lines they found a hose that leaked slowly berly a drop a minute in a connection point ( and showed it to me ) they changed the clip on the connection and I had to pay for it as per the service man it wasn't the part that they have changed :-0 , and also gave me an estimate on reservoar as according to their opinion that is where the problem might be 0-: . As I was leaving the shop few hundred meters in a stop light the RPM was starting to jump , I turned around and went back to the shop , this time they connected the vag-com to the car the service man did something and the RPM return to normal , and told me that the reservoar have to be changed ( and told me to check that the heat gage not going above 90c and if the light come up again just add coolant ) .As they are authorized dealer shop I took their advice ( looking back what a mistake :-(((( ).

I kept driving the car and every time the coolant light came up I checked the reservar add coolant, check the oil( was already black) and keep driving . sometime the light came up and the reservar was full so I kept driving .

THE LEMON : There weeks ago I drove the car for a weekend day trip with the family, while driving I tried to pass another car ( it was about 70km/h and the car was in 6th gear) as i pressed the gas pedal the car simply was sluggish there wasn’t lowering in gear so I lowered my foot from the gas pedal and returned to my lane as a car was coming from opposite direction, I didn’t pay any attention and kept driving ( the road included climbing a mountain in a sinc road so I drove the car manually) as we got to the top of the mountain we stop for refreshment I shut the engine and got drinks , I would say that after about two minutes steam started to come from under the hood :-(, I open the hood slowly and took a look the hose that come from the back of the engine and connect to the reservar was squirting coolant at the engine connection :-(((( ( what a start for a weekend drive) . The man at the soda stand suggested that he know a mechanic shop less than 1 km from where we are and he can help with fixing the hose. Fill the reservoir with coolant I had in the trunk and more water and drove to the mechanic.

The mechanic said “no problem” he can fix it but he doesn't have original hose he will put a cooling hose ( the generic hoses ) but he can’t do anything with it now he have to let it cool for a hour, great meanwhile we can try to salvage whatever we can from the trip , we got into a restaurant to have lunch. As we wrap up our lunch I get a call from him and telling me that my oil cooler is leaking :-(((((((( later I found out that it’s the transmission cooler it’s in the front of the engine passenger side) , when we got back to his shop the car was on the lift and the oil cooler was out. The waterline of the cooler was connected to air pressure in one side and shut closed on the other side and the cooler in a bucket of water and some oil came out from the oil line ( looking back no bubbles doe ) . That was it we can’t drive the car back home...called a taxi and called it for the day. Next day I started to look for the part from the number I took from the part ( according to my vin # and engine type which is BVJ ) . In the us supplier I bought the hose from sell it for 500usd OEM part, at our delar they sell it for 2800usd . As I didn’t want to wait for the part from us I bought it from a salvage yard used but OEM .He put everything together checked the transmission oil and added up oil until it spill .

THE TEST DRIVE: when I got to 4 gear ( the shift from 3 was smooth no knocking) and when I am taking my foot from the accelerator and then press again ( as I have to adapt to the other vehicle speed in front of me ) the car start to shake and the same thing in 5 gear. We got back to the shop and he started to check the coils ( and he succeeded in selling me 8 spark plugs it seem that every shop see an Audi they have for some reason push products down your throat and suck clean your wallet :-() , left his shop and drove home with the knowledge that the story is not finished , as the car still shake in 4th and 5th gear, in low torque under 2000 RPM , highway or freeway for west coasters ;-) , the shift are smooth with no problems . Left in the garage for the night ( as it is not my daily drive, thank you Hunda for making a reliable cars ;-)) .

THE LEMONADE: the next day I started looking for other audi shops when I told them the problems it seems as if they never forgot to mention that Audi parts are very expensive, bring the car and we will check it recommended by flatbed tow truck 500$ for the diagnose if I decide to fix it in there shop they will deduct the diagnose. I even tried to look for independent shops that are familiar with the A8 . and said that I don’t want to drive as I don’t want to damage it worse . For some reason all of them never forgot to mention that Audi parts are VERY EXPENSIVE . it felt like they “greasing” me instead of oiling the car . Since it was almost the weekend so no decision was made .

During the weekend few developments happened( Thanksgiving weekend as I recall ) the first I started the car in the garage so the battery will not die , When I checked the oil stick the oil stick was brown :-(( . The second I started research the Web this is when I came across this forum , and ross vag-com .

During the last two weeks I did intensive research in the internet found out how to change oil, ordered the vag-com from ross ( still nothing was done in the car not even starting the engine) bought the oil pumping I can’t get under the car yet ;-) . I got the pump at the beginning of the week and pumped the oil as I saw on youtube :-) . the next day I couldn’t attend to the car , so my brother took the oil to some of his mechanic friends ( I forgot to mention that my brother and I are working on restoring a 54 GMC pick-up truck ) and they told him that the oil is mixed with coolant :-\ , That's where the discoloration .

The next day I got the cable from ross and the first thing I did was this report:

0-: I got a shock but not giving up , back to research from the research, common sense and deductive reasoning , I came to a conclusion that during the time the car was in the last shop the battery went dead and they jump started the car ( as I recall I received a call from him asking me how to lift the car as the car went low and he couldn't pull it out from the lift ) and the fault date stamp fit the date . Last weekend after a lot of debating because of continuous research on the faults I started to think that the brown sludge in the oil is not coolant it’s gasoline that leaked to the oil pan because of the faults the mix was rich with gasoline . My nefue suggested that simply make a simple test try to light the oil with fire , take a small drop put it in a clear unflamble surface and try to light it and wow it light up :-) . What a brake and what a relief .

I started the week with feeling the oil and sludge cleaner , put injector cleaner in the gas tank , and finally started as I was worried about the battery, and started right away . let the engine run for 10 minutes and the engine didn’t even warmd to 90c (according to the sludge cleaner instruction) meanwhile I connected the vag-com and check meas. Blocks values where a mess , readiness failed on O2 and other measuring . shut engine off and left the switch on started suking the oil again , cleared all the faults ( after learning that it’s ok to clear and if the fault coming back you have to fix them) and took another auto-scan this time:

This time I bought the air flow sensor cleaner and clean it as I saw on youtube how to clean it . Fill oil again changed filter , and started the car again and let it run for another 20 min. Checked the oil and wow clear oil after 20 min. Of working. Next day cleared faults learned that after you clean the sensor you need to do throttle body alignment did it and cleared all faults, and started the car let it warm to 90c and work for a while ( the sound of engine started to sound cleaner and smoother). Shut engine clear faults and did auto-scan :

Some satisfaction :-) ,I took the car for a test drive and filling gasoline as all the running the motor started to empty the tank . the engine sounded good and shifting was smooth as I got to 4th and 5th gear between 60 - 70 kmh , the shaking started again . got back home and put the car in the garage again . But this time the research is specified on the transmission . After research I noticed that there is a specific procedure for checking trany oil ( and I remmember that the last shop didn’t check the oil when the engine was running) . Than I found about adaption from the zf workbook, tried it for the past two days I found a road near by to complete the first stage. When I did the first stage and tried to bring the car to 80 kmh on low throttle at this speed the trany jumped to 5th gear already :-( , I had to move the shift to manual to lock it on 4th and when I took the foot of the gas and let the car freewill down to 40 kmh I moved the shift back to D the trany jumped to 5th gear . so it didn’t work as the trany still shakes on 4th and 5th gear on low rpm , under 2000 rpm above the shifts are smooth, even coming to a stop the shift down are smooth with no bumps .

As experienced and some of you from reading here are very experienced with this vehicle , how do you think I have to continue from here ? is it a computer fix or oil, or more mechanically, I noticed here a similar trany problem after oil change .

Thank you for your time attention and any advice

Well, I can't say I've heard of this kind of thing ever being solved from a simple fluid and filter change, it sounds like at the very least your mechatronix need a rebuild. I'll wait for MP4.2 to chime in here, he has more experience in the details, I wouldn't want to point you in a direction that would waste your time or money.

I am having some trouble following this. Question: is the basic coolant issue leaking fixed yet or not?

I dom't know the BVJ (FSI) 4.2, but am really unsure what cooler you are describing. The transmission coolers should be clear back behind the engine. There is also the cooler integrated with the radiator IIRC. I dont get the sense reading this it is in either of these locations, but maybe I am missing something.

Second question: can you take a picture of the cooler and post a picture of it? Or, find a parts diagram and point it out.

Where I am going with this is I am not sure if this is really about a transmission cooler, as opposed to an engine oil cooler. Casually in reading along, the locations described felt to me more like an oil cooler. I realize there is a shifting issue, but there is a also discussion about oil and water being mixed, and the leaks.

My general suggestion is first straighten out any issues with leaks or any oil and water mixing. Also, straighten out the engine issues generally. From your second scan, it is indicating issues with the MAF and with a cam sensor. Get to the bottom of those. It could be the parts, but is could be the wiring or connectors too. The cam sensor issue could (and probably is) causing the engine to cut back power to avoid damage. The MAF issue may be affecting running too. Notice in the first scan the transmission codes were about a load signal from the engine computer (ECU). The load signal is critical to the transmission operation and shifting. Thus, I worry various engine side issues may be confusing the transmission situation.

Happy to consider the transmission side further, but first these other issues on the engine side should be resolved without remaining codes like are there now. Again, I also want to get to the bottom of which cooler it is, and whether fixed. If it is a tranny cooling issue, obviously any water contamination there is a really big issue.

Or, could it be part of the power steering system? On my BFM engine '04, the power steering lines go through the radiator eliminating the typical VW/Audi Rube Goldberg power steering pipes that zig-zag all over the bottom of the engine like they do on the smaller engine vehicles.

Thank you for reply
M.P 4.2 Answers in the order you asked .

the coolant mystery is not resolved yet, I had to fill the reservoir since I got it back about 2 liter and no leaks under the car , checked engine oil for discoloration since I changed it ,I estimate that in total since I clean changed the oil I had 4 hours of motor running checked for level and nothing missing and nothing added .

This is cooling system on the BVJ engine

The coolant mystery I don't know if it is solved ,even before I went to the dealer the first time there was not discoloration in the oil and oil wasn't missing and wasn't added on the dip stick that's why it's still a mystery.
I will add some pictures in the next post

I see no evidence from the dipstick that coolant is being mixed with the oil. Looks pretty normal to me. Usually when coolant is mixed with oil, it turns milky.
