Default License Plate Mounting Screws

Why on earth do they have different License Plate Mounting Screws on the front of the car and the rear of the car?
The rear appears standard. But the front has a larger thread and a pointed tip like a wood screw.

Anyone know the spec? I went to my local AutoZone, but they didn't have anything that matched.

For the rears with a frame I use nylon. They never rust, are black and unoticable. The caps suck.
Buy them with the nuts and you have spacers for behind the frame.

Thanks.

Do you know the spec for the front? Photo below.
The thread looks twice as large as the "audi" rear lic.plate screws

Probably best to send a note to AudiUSAParts.com as they do a VIN check (as would your dealer).

Here's the front license bracket info (2016MY): https://www.audiusaparts.com/oem-par...ItMGwtbDQtZ2Fz

The front plate bracket comes with mounting screws to attach to bumper. I do not believe the plate screws are supplied by Audi. I am in NJ also and don't have my bracket installed but it was in the trunk as requested and the mounting screw holes are taped over with the screws in there but there are not plate mounting screws supplied.

I have an assortment of black screws Like that and the only way to know a screws size is by measuring the shank.
The rears are M6 so that is not bigger than the rear for shank, head is somewhat immaterial.

I looked at that picture and should clarify my bracket is different for he RS. Easy way to get the screw size is stick the but end of a drill bit in the hole then cross reference the drill size to a screw size. I am going to guess that is a #10 screw, look about right?

Good tip timzcat.

There sure are a lot of similar metric Phillips pan head (Truss) self taping screws. I presume they go self tapping on the front as more universal vs. the machine screws on the rear.

Default Thoughts about protecting your plates

.
I always use a thin nylon/rubber washer under the head of each screw when mounting the license plates on my cars, to protect the two dissimilar metals from reacting to each other. This has helped protect the screws from rusting.

Can you relocated your plate to the side? Is that allowed in NJ? Here is my TT that just happened to be parked beside a nardo RS.

I've used the off-center mounting of the front license plate here in New Jersey - no problem, since it's still properly mounted on the front of the car.
