2018 Audi S5 "*" programmable button stop working.
The "*" button on the steer wheel was programmed to the drive select like most people do. After few ignition cycle, the button does not respond. Reprogram it seems to fix the issue temporarily but the button stops working again. Is something taking this program out?

Had this happen once although it started working again at some point, probably when I restarted the car.
Honestly our S5 has had so many random glitches I tend to expect the unexpected.

This does happen occasionally. And has since around 2011, despite many iterations of MMI since then. I had it happen 3 or 4 times on my A7, but only once on my S5. But yours sounds more than occasional.

Thanks for the replies
Thanks guys!
I played around with it some more and discovered some interesting solutions Incase others have not tried it.
1. When I reprogram the button, it started to work again.
2. Trying to use the button as soon as the car starts seems to cause the button failures more frequent. Not sure if this is due to MMI loading...
3. When reprogramming, instead of selecting another option then going back to your original selection....reclick on the existing select and backing out seems to keep the programming button

Fat fingered the submit button.
....reseleting the existing button and backing out the MMI window seems to hold the configuration longer as long as you don’t operate the button right after the car is in ignition. Give the car a minute or so to load up and my issue seemed to go away.
Its only been been two days but it’s holding up so far.
Hope this helps with others.

Reprogram
select vehical settings and you will see an option called steering wheel button. You will know right away since the picture on the right will zoom to the “*” button. Then, select from 6-8 differently option you want that button to function as.
