Default New Q7 Issue - Engine Light, Lift Fault & ESP Warning

Hey everyone,

I'd been experiencing an issue with my wife's 07' Q7 4.2 S-Line periodically. It seemed to have just gone away.... until this week. We went a good 2 months without a problem when it started happening this week, and twice this weekend. I have no idea what triggers it. I will start with a description, then ROSS-Tech log.

MIL VISUALS:
After driving it off and on during a couple hours of errands (for example), this all starts with an audible ESP fault & message center warning, simultaneously with the amber traction control light illuminating. Shortly after (less than a minute), the amber ride height indication illuminates, and then the engine light a few moments later.

BEHAVIORALLY:
The transmission appears to go to a full 50/50 front/rear power distribution mode. Purely an assumption, as what occurs is that on sharper turns the tires seem to bind as though the differentials are not slipping appropriately (for you older guys like me, or, drifters; it's like when you try to turn a tight corner with welded rear diff or live axles). In addition to this, and, MUCH more concerning, the transmission will down shift VERY aggressively... If you're holding a drink without a lid, it will end up everywhere. Upshifts fine... maybe a little delayed but smooth. When these series of faults occur, I put the car in neutral as I roll to a stop as I feel like it is torture on CV joints and transmission clutches. The engine, seems to run fine, though I keep getting MAF & lean codes with these particular events. Then MAF/Lean codes have been an off and on problem since I bought the car though. It runs fine though.

Once the vehicle cools down (overnight), the car seems to be fine. Lights are off, behaves fine.... like it never happened. The same cycle comes back eventually... It's like driving on eggshells- Totally erodes the driving experience for me. I have no idea what triggers this other than driving it too long. Could be a day.. could be a week, or 2 months. But it only happens after a lot of stop & go.

**Note: The car always turns over somewhat slow at first but then starts cranking faster (as it's turning over). Hard to explain- But when you first hit the start button, your first impulse is that the battery is low, but then it starts cranking faster right before it actually ignites. The whole process is only a couple seconds. Not sure if I have a battery issue??? But usually battery issues mean the car starts turning over slower as it cranks.. not faster. It's just an odd observation I thought was worth mentioning.

Anyhow, Below are the logs (I organized them with door & HVAC faults at the bottom- I don't really care about those right now).

Thanks in advance to anyone who has seen something similar and has a direction they can point me in!!
~George

Clear out all the codes and see what comes back, most of those are old, but it looks like your MAF might need cleaning/replacing.

Default how old is your battery....

weird electrical issues will exhibit themselves in very odd ways when your battery has seen better days.

From the D3 world, those audis do very strange things when the battery starts getting low. And the batteries dont last too long in them. i dont know how heavy the Q7 is on battry usage but if its anything like a D3, 4 years max out of a battery.
There are two door handles that are showing short to ground. Means it is drawing power all the time. A low batterty state may be described similar to what you expereince, crank starts slow then speeds up. Things are starting to move, oil is displacing and friction is starting to come down.
But yes, first clear codes, see what comes back.
You may need to do into each specific module and clear from there, as i foudn sometimes auto clear doesnt work on my S8 for all modules

Clearing them is a weekly routine. They come back. Sometimes, with 2010 time stamps (which is odd).

Not if your battery is ****, you should have that checked out asap then.

Yeah I'm beginning to wonder about that too. Battery seemed fairly new but maybe someone didn't re calibrate after install. I have no idea how to do that and don't have the proper equiptment for it anyhow. Might need to bring it to a shop

The transmission valve body was replaced in December. Filters & fluid completely replaced then.

This is helpful, thank you. I am beginning to think the battery is indeed at least one of the issues. The lean & MAF codes i think may be a vacuum leak, which will need to be smoke tested. Just a theory though (Mafs are both replaced).

Thanks again!
