Audi Phone Box is an option available in other markets. It is not available in the US or Canada. In addition to wirelessly charging, it also creates an inductive connection to the vehicle's sharkfin antenna to enhance the mobile device signal.

I've retrofitted it on several models now and it's pretty useless on the SQ5 with a smaller sized phone like the iPhone X. Whenever turning the phone can slide, which breaks the inductive coupling and stops it charging.

Would this work if the phone had a non-slip case? Whould it stop the sliding in most reasonable situations?

I use a non-slip case and it still slides around.

I think BMW sadly has a better method of keeping the phone in one place. Maybe Audi will change their implementation in future cars. How is it done on the new A8?

There's a universal clip-like holder that the phone snaps into. It holds it in place securely. And yes, as designs evolve this will become the standard. Except in the USA. :P

This is super frustrating. The phone box feels like beta hardware. Apart from what you describe, whenever the phone moves by the smallest amount, a message pops up on the MMI complaining that there is something else in the tray, preventing the phone to charge. The notification stays on screen until it is acknowledged by pressing the MMI button. I also find that my phone gets extremely hot when in the cradle, to such extent that my phone will get damaged.

It simply does not work. I've lodged a complaint with the dealer many months ago but to date, I've not had any feedback.

Default Wireless charging

Homemade wireless charger for Q5
I made a wireless charger for my 2018 Audi Q5 Prestige. Very simple and easy to make works great and won't slide off because of the recessed section to hold the phone in place.
