Is the engine running? If so, does it sound ok and have the same power as usual?

Is this a 2.0T and has the timing chain tensioner ever been replaced?

Is the engine running?

When you push the key, the starter operates, but the engine doesn’t start.

If so, does it sound ok and have the same power as usual?

This is how the issue started: two days ago at about 1pm, i was going out to a restaurant with my wife, so i started the engine (all was fine as usual, no MIL, no weird noises or anything) but as soon as i pulled out of the driveway, i noticed that although the radio was on (i could see it on the MMI screen) there was no sound coming out; at this point i was going at a very low speed, since i live in an equestrian comunity with dirt roads, and traffic is almost non-existent, and at about 2 blocks from my garage exit, as i was fiddling with the no-sound issue, the car just had a brief “hiccup” on the power, and immediately after that it lost throttle, and power steering. Since i was going at such low speed, i simply pulled over, walked back home (less than two blocks), grabbed my Audi TT, and towed the Q5 back to my garage using the TT. Then yesterday morning (Sunday) is when i hooked up the VCDS and got the fault codes shown in the original post.

Is this a 2.0T and has the timing chain tensioner ever been replaced?

It is the 2011 2.0T Premium Plus Q5.

I’ve owned it since October 2015, it had a little bit over 100k miles at the time of purchase, so I’m not sure if the timing belt was replaced before i bought it or not. This is actually the first issue i have encountered with this vehicle. It has about 127k miles now so either way i guess the timing belt (chain) might need to be replaced.

As for the second fault code on the engine, i believe it is related to a failure on the diverter valve; correct me if im wrong, but i assume that that’s a minor issue related to the turbo, and it’s unlikely that it would have caused the issue im having.

Given the fact that i have a couple of fault codes related to electrical failures, and almost all seem to be related to the sound system (two rear speakers w/ open circuit, front right microphone with electrical fault, and “energy management active” on CAN gateway), and since the “no-sound” issue was the first symptom i noticed, is it possible that those electrical failure have somehow “triggered” the engine issues?

BTW i already replaced the camshaft positioning sensor and it made no difference.

Hope this info can help clearing the picture.

PS. i live in sunny Florida, temp is around 74, so no extreme weather around here at this time

Again, thanks in advance!

I wrote a lengthy reply this morning, with all the details of what happened when i got the issue, but somehow it didn't go through; it said something about a moderator having to review my post (?)... weird.

Well, take two: to summarize:

- Starter runs, but engine doesn't start. it never went to "limp mode" or anything.

- It simply had a brief "hiccup" on the power and then lost throttle and power steering, all after maybe 2 minutes of start, and without me doing any sudden acceleration or anything; in fact, i was (thankfully) going at a very low speed when this happened. At that time i simply pulled over, walked back home, grabbed my Audi TT, and towed the Q5 back home (less than 2 blocks away).

- Before the failure, i had no MIL or unusual noises during start. Only thing i noticed was that the sound system wasn't properly working; i could see me media screen on the MMI, but there was no sound; as i was fiddling w/ the sound, that's when i got the failure. Since i have a couple of electrical fault codes, could it be the case that an electrical failure triggered this whole thing?

- It is a 2011 2.0T Premium Plus Q5. Bought it on October 2015, with a little bit over 100k miles at that moment, so i'm not sure if timing belt (chain) and tensioner was previously replaced.

- It has 127k miles now. This have been my first "major" issue w/ this vehicle.

Hope this helps clear the picture a bit.

Thanks in advance!

Geez I hope it's not a timing chain issue.Audi should be ashamed of how they've handled this issue with the 2.0L T .Guess they spent all the spare cash on Dieselgate and 2.0L T oil consumption issue.

Yes, the electrical issues seem odd if the timing belt tensioner failed.
Hopefully it is just some fuse/relay etc. causing the non start issues.

But you do realize that you most likely have a version of the timing belt tensioner that is known to go bad and damage the engine (valves hit the pistons) cost to repair is about $7K at a dealer.
If you plan on keeping the Q5 much longer you may want to invest in replacing the timing chain, guides, and tensioner.

A quick check to see if the tensioner failed, and if the valves are bent, is to perform a simple engine compression check.

Also if the engine spins more freely trying to start than what you remember before the problem, then it is probably a good idea to check the compression.

Well Bob, thanks for the heads-up... i really hope it doesn't come to that

I was planning on replacing the timing chain, guides, and tensioner, after a conversation i recently had with a close friend who is an experienced mechanic, and he also mentioned that a compression test will shed light as to how bad the issue really is; i have an alternative to bringing the SUV to the stealer... so i'll get the comp test done, and if it goes well, i'll move forward with the timing chain replacement.

Wish me luck guys... i certainly need it!

This got me in a particularly vulnerable moment, so i hope i'll somehow get to dodge this bullet...

Again, thanks!

Hopefully it is just an electrical issue.

If the tensioner failed and you only jumper a tooth or so you may have not damaged the valves, keeping the expense down to a tensioner, chain, etc.. If you keep trying to turn over the engine you could cause the chain to jump more teeth and then damage the valves which will run you a few $K more.

Many owners have had the tensioner fail and valves damage at just trying to start the car.
