Canary in coal mine?--both Arnott & RMT are not buying D3 (non sport) air shock units
Both now appear to out of the market for buying the most common D3 used strut cores. Arnott says on website it now only is buying D3 rear sport air units. RMT doesn't say on web site, but by email they just confirmed they aren't buying at least a non-sport front. In my case, I had the core from a swap out of a bad driver's front for a junkyard/used unit. $300 for that, including shipping. A 2005. FWIW, hard to find anything newer on eBay, almost at any price, and a sea of 2004's all over the map on pricing. My next check would have been car-parts.com for a more conventional junkyard search.
I had sold my core to Arnott for right front several years ago. Easy; $75 and they provided a shipping label. But times have changed. Could be market is drying up with more being scrapped, or word may be out more and more on follow up issues with rebuilts, or they are getting enough cores elsewhere, or for Arnott they are managing to move a lot to their watered down in house version, or _____?

Arnott is no longer purchasing used OE cores for the non-sport A8 vehicles. We currently have enough to meet demand - but that could always change.
Here is a link to the struts Arnott is currently purchasing (future post readers - it may be worth checking to see if we are currently purchasing the non-sport struts): https://www.arnottindustries.com/recycle-cores

For the rest of the board members FWIW, I really do not want my post tied to these Arnott struts. The subject was not the same as the reply either. But since it was made nonetheless...these are not OE in terms of full functionality. Search for more post debates, which I won't belabor here.
On my first install, I used dealer OE. On the second one with my family on more of a budget and car yet older, we used a junkyard used one from as recent and low miles a donor as we could find.

I agree 100%, and my thought to the reply is, I for one do not care that a vehicle is of certain age, I always want it to function fully as it was intended from new, I will always find a way to repair any item, and suspension as other on here have, like Louis replacing the bag, others doing O-Rings, and since when did the active damping start wearing out in 10 years.....

RMT rebuilds work
Now have a RMT rebuild on my A8 fronts. And the XJR has four rebuilds from RMT. Seems to work and hold up. My wife is driving the XJR almost every day.

Doug updated his post, removing statements that the active damping fails, and that's the reason why Arnott's new replacements don't have it.
I can't tell any difference between Sport and Comfort with my stock shocks, but wouldn't there be a warning light if it fails?
