Tailgate opens with button only if motor is on.
I have a 2014 Q7 and have always opened the hatch with the button on the driver's side. Suddenly last week this button only works if the engine is ON. The hatch will open from the outside if the engine is OFF.
Does something need to be reset? Did something accidentally get pushed to cause this?

Yep thats how it works...
They don't want any of those nasty exhaust fumes to get into your car so with the engine running so the only way you can open the hatch is with the button on the drivers door. I feel so much safer now!

It's possible your new battery never got codded into the ECU so your car thinks the battery is too low and won't allow the electronic tailgate to operate unless the car is being powered by the alternator.
Also, if this is the case, your new battery will burn out in a matter of months due to over charging.

valet mode
did you turn on valet mode? it should be a button to the right of the screen and when it's active an orange LED on the button illuminates.
I run my car with valet mode active all the time as that keeps the globe compartment from opening when the car is not turned on and I discovered that this also keeps the tail gate from opening if you press the button on the door to open the tailgate. Makes it harder for crooks to get into my globe compartment and also try and open the tailgate when the car is turned off.
