Default New hydraulic timing tensioner won’t fit?

I started the timing belt job on my 04 1.8t the other day. Everything has been okay so far, got as far as getting the old water pump out (which was a huge pain! Was the original OEM pump in there, and first ever timing job!). I went to go install the new hydraulic tensioner, gates kit TCKWP306AM, and the bottom bolt for some reason will not start to thread, it doesn’t have enough clearance. I tried putting the old tensioner back on just to see if I was going crazy and putting it in the wrong spot, but nope, I was instantly able to begin to thread the the bolt with the old part. Comparing the old and new parts side by side they look identical, hole size, everything. I don’t get it? Did I possibly get a defective unit?

Where did you get the kit? Sounds like you got a bolt that has the wrong pitch. You can either figure out with whomever sold you the kit where the problem is (this is what I would do) or I don't believe those are one time use bolts, so just use the old bolt.

Sounds like he used the same bolt, but the tensioner holes were not spaced the same. I just had an issue like that with a coolant pump on an AEB 1.8T Passat. The replacement pump's holes just didn't match, so I bought a new Graf pump which fit normally.

This is odd. I have never had bolt patterns or bolts not fit, hence my question of what the source of the parts was. Understand that I don't do 3 and 4 of these a week, more like 1 a year, but still haven't ever had this situation and done 2 timing belt jobs on a 1.8t,
